Languages for Shared Science

  1. MathML (Mathematics Modeling Language)

A language for sharing mathematics on the web. The method is based on the framework of XML.

From the Gentle Introduction to MathML, "MathML is about encoding the structure of mathematical expressions so that they can be displayed, manipulated and shared over the World Wide Web."

  2. Systems Biology Markup Language (SBML)

Biology in a sense is a funny animal in my view. It combines an empirical view of living systems, with a gradual attempt to allow examination of these findings using principles established in:
    1. Mathematics,
    2. Physics and
    3. Chemistry
. The EMPIRICAL nature of Bio-logy has also made it amenable for influence from and on

Thus a language to atleast share biological models is daunting from the outset and SBML is one of the many attempts. But it is the inherent nature of the beast that leaves a lot to be desired in such a system.
