Yorkshire's Goth Metal overlords Paradise Lost have spent years wandering in the wilderness after several bizarre style changes.  But it's this perversity that makes us love them argues John Doran after talking to singer Nick Holmes.

"Of man's first disobedience and the fruit/ Of that forbidden tree whose mortal taste/ Brought death into the world and all our woe/ With loss of Eden..."  Thus begins probably the greatest English epic poem of all time, John Milton's Paradise Lost. But before you start pushing nine inch nails up you nostrils and begin preparing to head butt the table in front of you, wait one second.  It is also arguably the first mainstream work of Satanism in literature.  The Horned One, some academics argue, is painted as a hugely sympathetic charter in the verse which was finished in 1666.  He is the main character of the piece and is shown as a proud and inquisitive angel who questions the all-powerful deity God and ultimately chooses free will over subservience, waging war on Heaven before being cast into Hell. Obviously we mention this because it is the genesis of the name of Halifax, Yorkshire's heaviest and most doom-laden sons, Paradise Lost....     [NEXT]
