Sikth were in mid-flow when I arrived (sorry lads) and though they are loud on record, they are seriously loud in person. They went down a storm to the assembled masses and rounded off their set with a blinding version of Hold My Finger. Well the waiting is over & thank G.O.D. Pitchsifter are back to their old form! Though I dearly love the band, and really enjoyed their 'final' tour last year, it was obvious that the lads were to some extent going through the motions. Not anymore.... the high jumps, crazy dancing and stage diving are all back. One slightly over enthusiastic crew member dramatically threw himself off the stage, and amusingly had a lot of trouble getting backstage past security. Having said that most of the secuirty staff spent a large proportion of the evening holding the front barrier together against the crush.
Teasing queries from JS as to which songs we wanted to hear resulted in an onslaught of calls for the sorely missed Underacheiver, and lead to a classic "no pick something this AD." Predictably the singer was then barraged with titles such as White Out, Ephemerol & Virus. Triad made a guest appearance, but was the only one of the older songs to do so. Shame.
One disturbing turn of events was the arrival of the PSI Choir for a rendition of Please Sir. It'll be quite a while before I hear anything as scary as the high pitched "please sir, please sir" chant again. Can't see it catching on for school choir concerts just yet, but then again it would be a good way to corrupt kids before anyone else gets the chance... Pitchshifter I like your thinking. JS explained that the choir was actually to please his Mom, who had previously suggested he play a 'nice song' for a change! I was rather miffed that the lads weren't going to play Please Sir themselves, but thankfully the band came back on to play their own version as an encore. A stage dive from JS and hugs all round from him & Dan rounded off a spectacular reunion gig.
How can you really sum up the energy that Pitchsifter put into their live shows? It's just not possible. At their best they are like a live wire, infecting everyone with their raw enthusiasm. I have never seen a band that were able to turn a crowd into such an energetic whealing mass so quickly. Pitchshifter really are a band you must see live to really appreciate, the records don't even come near, and that is the key to their continued success. They are the best live band I've ever seen - bar none. See you in Manchester. Set List: Scene This (>) Keep It Clean (>) Eight Days (>) We know (>) Hidden Agenda (>) Triad (>) Down (>) My Kind (>) What's Innit For Me? (>) Genius (>) Microwaved (>) Shutdown (>) Please Sir CHOIR (>) Please Sir PSI *on a lighter note* after years of staunch resistance, my other half finally admitted that PSI are good, and he likes them. he even went as far as to own up to singing along to genius. bless.
