Wannabe

"'Do you know, ultimately,' I asked, 'who will prove to be your one best trainer?'
'No, Master,' she said.
'You, yourself,' I said, 'the girl, herself, eager to please, imaginative and intelligent, monitoring her own performances and feelings, striving lovingly to improve and refine them. You yourself will be largely responsible for making yourself the superb slave you will become.'"
John Norman, Savages of Gor, p. 210

"Vanity is easily duped. Ambition, not."

During arani's time in Gor chat, and participating in Gorean message boards, she has occasionally seen one person refer to another as a "wannabe." This term is usually intended as a gross insult -- in other words, the person labelled as such has no idea what he/she is talking about and should get lost in a relatively rapid fashion. Well, what arani would like to know is this: What is so bad about wanting to be something?
arani wants to be many things. she wants to have the figure she did when she was 17 years old. she wants to be able to run a marathon. she wants to be able to speak fluenty in another language. The fact that she will most likely never accomplish these things isn't bad in itself. We all need to have ambitions, fantasies, and aspirations. That's part of what helps us to be successful human beings.
There was a time when arani wanted to earn a Master's degree. (Funny thing, eh? A slave with a Master's degree?) Well, arani worked hard and studied, and when she was 25 years old she earned her Master's degree. And now, 20 years later, she is using that degree and working in a career that makes her feel very fulfilled, and which makes her Master very proud of her. The point here is that arani wanted something badly enough that she got out there and worked for it, and achieved her goal.
There are many women out there who are born with the innate need to serve -- they are what some people would call "natural slaves." But, having that inner drive to kneel before a strong Man and be totally and completely conrolled by Him doesn't necessarily make it so. We all have to learn what slavery is all about, what it is within us that makes it so, how to go about being pleasing to a Man, how to find a Man to be pleasing to, how to serve Him in the fashion that He wants to be served, and so on. As arani has said before, slavery is a journey that doesn't end until the day we die.
Most of us experienced slaves can all recall a time, when we were just discovering our slavery, when we made some horribly dreadful mistakes. We all think back and shake our head, saying "I can't believe I ever did that!" Maybe some of us were severely chastised by some Free Person for our misdeed, and then we learned from that mistake. Hopefully, we have grown since that time.
So, here's something to remember the next time you see a girl in an on-line tavern, or read her words on a message board, and think, "What the **** can she have been thinking?" Maybe that girl is stumbling around, like we were once, trying to do the best she can. Maybe she is craving for someone to teach her, to show her by example, what being a slave is all about. Maybe, one day, she will be a beautiful kajira that everyone will want to emulate.
Just maybe.
