Slavery 101

"Though I am a slave," she said, "yet for the first time in my life, I am free."
John Norman, Nomads of Gor, p. 303

"To be without some of the things you want is an indispensable part of happiness."
Bertrand Russell

So, you've decided, for one reason or another, that slavery is for you. (Or, to put it more accurately, you've discovered -- in your heart -- that you're a slave. One doesn't jusst decide to become a Gorean slave, like one decides to buy a car.) First of all, welcome sister. Now, the question is, what do you do now? Do you just go to the first Gorean tavern you can find and dive right in? arani would would strongly recommend that you not do so. A girl can get hurt if she does not arm herself with some knowledge before venturing into on-line Gor on a serious basis.

Of course, the first and best place to go for information about Gor is directly to the source, the Gor novels of John Norman. However, these are somewhat hard to find. In the four years that this one has been in Gor, she has still not managed to find all of the 26 books. she does not mean to discourage anyone from trying. This can be a delightful quest, and one that will prove very rewarding to you. Some of the books have been re-printed, and may be ordered from some of the larger bookselling chains. Others may be found by frequenting used book stores and flea markets. Another source for obtaining the books is through on-line auction services, such as those offered through Amazon.com or eBay. a girl lists some of these sources on the Links page of this site.

In lieu of the books, another good source for learning about Gor is the many websites that are on the web. There are some excellent resources that give much useful information about Gor in general, and about slavery in particular. One caution needs to be given here. Some of these websites are done with much forethought by people who are very knowledgeable. However, arani has found some misinformation presented on some other sites. One must bear in mind that, sometimes, what is presented is just one person's opinion. she knows full well that there are probably errors in her own website, and she hopes that if anyone finds something that is wrong, they will take the time to correct her.

Another very good way to learn about Gor is to talk to others, both slave and Free. Ask questions, and listen to any information or advice that is offered. Many of this one's sisters and brothers are eager to share with new slaves, and to help out when needed. And there are many Free Persons who are very willing to take time to teach a new slave. Don't be afraid to ask questions, or to ask what someone thinks about something.

Lastly, spend time in a Gorean tavern or inn, observing what goes on. Most owners will welcome a new slave, as long as she behaves with the proper decorum, and shows that she is trying to learn. However, just because you say you are new and still learning, that does not safeguard you from being called upon to serve in some way. Before you venture into a tavern for the first time, you should know at least the rudiments of entering a room, greeting, how to behave in a room, and some basic serving techniques.

Most of the Free, if told that a slave is new and learning, will be patient with her, as long as she behaves respectfully. If you are corrected -- if you do something wrong and it is pointed out to you -- this is not necessarily a bad thing. Thank the Master for taking the time to correct you and to teach you what is right and proper, and then try to learn from your mistake. this one made plenty of mistakes when she was new to Gor -- for goodness' sake, she still makes mistakes from time to time. Everyone does. That does not mean we should be ashamed and hang our heads, only to decide that we are not good slaves and give up. As long as we use them as a chance for growth, and strive to constantly improve ourselves, then we will show our true worth as slaves.

this one wishes you well on your quest for knowledge, and also much success in your efforts to learn. The real sign of a good slave is not how fancy or detailed her serves are, or if she knows 35 different positions or can recite quotes from the books. The mark of a good slave is if she serves from her heart, if she constantly strives to be pleasing and to better herself. arani has told more than one new slave that it is better to do a short, simple serve that has all the required elements and is obviously done from the heart, than to do a fancy detailed serve that is missing something and is done to show off.

" 'What are the duties of a slave?' I asked.
'They are complex and manifold, Master,' she said.
'Speak generally,' I said.
'We are to be absolutely docile,' she said, 'totally obedient and fully pleasing.' "
John Norman, Savages of Gor, p. 184
