Competition Question and Answer:

What do you do just before stepping on the ice or in between warm up and your program to get focused?  Usually say something to each other, like “are you ready toots?” or squeeze each others hands.  We don’t make it too serious, we try to keep it light, not make it so intense. It’s more like we are going out there to enjoy it, do well, we don’t go into it negatively.   Try to make light of it.  We talk backstage when other people are skating, we don’t really….we don’t talk to each other during, the odd times words will fly out of our mouths, no really a conversation.  When things go bad, it’s totally a reflex.   Tara: Tyler gets really angry, with himself, not with anybody else....

Do you have the opportunity to see the cities in which you travel for competition?  Mostly eastern European countries, so RussiaGermany twice, Austria, Bulgaria, the Ukraine Croatia, the states a couple times.

Tyler, yeah, it depends on the team leader though, usually we get some kind of scenic tour and try to hit all the sites in the city.  We always have a tour that you go on and you always eat out with the team to try and get some of that cultural experience like the food….generally we get in a little bit.

Which was your favorite? Mine was china, but I did it with another partner, it was my first trip overseas, it was culture shock, it was amazing  Mine was Germany, just because the place we go it’s called Obersdorf, and its this tiny little village at the base of the Alps, it’s the most amazing place I’ve ever been.

How much of it is administrative, like signing in, etc?  Tyler, the really major events, there’s always a closing banquet, there’s really no opening anything, you just show up and fill out your paperwork and get your name tag Tara:  there’s always a draw for the compulsories.

Do you have trouble winding down after doing a program in competition?  Usually take time off, a couple days anyways…..The feeling of anxiety, even if you are happy with yourself, it’s such a build for that one moment, and then it’s over. There’s so much hype….  I find that because they are so exhausting by the day of the free dance you can barely get through your free dance, by the time it’s over its just a huge relief off your shoulders.
What was your Favorite Program and why?  the only year we won it was foxtrot/Charleston, and we skating to all that jazz from Chicago, and I loved that program, I love the costume, I loved the music, I loved doing it, and we skated it amazing.   The Bad Drag, first year senior, I think it was the best for us, just the expression of character, and the music kind of sexy kind of playful, that’s what we do best.  We interact really well as a team we play with each other we find it really easy to feed off each other we he’s doing something silly I find it really easy to feed off him, we are really good at playing parts. We approach it like an actor or an actress would, we like to get into character from the moment you get on the ice, the way that we skated out to the program last year we really had to get into the mime character, its helps you get through it.
Was it a signature piece?  No, it’s something we would consider using again, if it wasn’t for the Chicago film phenomenon, it’s not that it killed it but everyone’s going to use it, all the lower level kids, don’t want to  a piece of music that you anticipate everyone using to death, maybe in a few years.

How do you choose the music?  We think of what style we want to go with for that year, and like last year the first year we were senior we received  a lot of hype for the program, it was fun, and entertaining….so people were suggested that we carry that forward for another year, and this year we decided that we wanted to be more mature so you look for more mature music in somebody that you like, somebody that you are passionate about, Tyler and I both love Andre Bocelli, that’s why we chose the piece that we did.  Its based on if you get on the ice and you love skating to it and it feels good then that’s the music you’ll choose.  Tyler: I spend a lot of time on the internet looking at stuff, I just like doing that and I find a lot of music for the other kids around the rink, I like to do that so, but her dad has an extensive cd collection, that’s where we found the free dance... yeah my dad found a piece for us so…. Biggest success this season?  Depends on your definition of success, the best we skating all year – was in Vienna, but we were really really disappointed with the result there.  So we skated well in Obersdorf and we were happy with how we did because we almost beat this chec… team that we always lose by a split to, they are probably 13th in the world, something like that so it wasn’t a disappointment to be there at all, we skated reasonably well, and then we go to Vienna and we skate really well all the way through and we come 5th

Thornhill 2003

out of 6 so it was very disappointing, but we had everything from 3rd to last. Tara:  I think for us as a team a good success was to be able to come out of Canadians and regroup and realize that we had skated well and it was just something that was out of our hands and it was really good for us to understand that we needed to keep going and we were good enough and other years I think it would have torn us apart as a team but because we’ve matured so much as a team -  we handed it really well compared to what we would have done the first year.
What was your favorite memory of this past season?  Tyler: Our free dance at Canadians -  skating it that was the first time we had really good crowd response, it was fun  we were really happy with how we skated there, it ended up being somewhat disappointing, but there were a few skaters, a flood and a warm up for the next group for us to get over it.  Tara:  we were both laughing while we were skating…
What are you goals in skating?  Tyler:  they are always changing, right now we just want to make the world team, want to see a few mainstream countries, like the  senior grand prix’s tend to get, (you’ll probably get china!) but you know what, china was great, but the countries choose, its nothing to do with skate Canada, our names were submitted on the same card as everyone else, but we didn’t get picked.
Things currently working on to improve?  Tyler: All elements can really be improved just overall speed and power is what we  try to focus on every year.
Idols in skating and why?  Tyler: a dancer, definitely Shae Lynn, her passion, but if I had to pick a skater I’d say Yagudin, he’s so passionate in everything he does, and he continually performs at the top of his game. Whereas Shae & Vic,  they perform really well in Canada, they were great at the Worlds too, but sometimes it gets tight and its not as free and outgoing as it can be. Tara:  Shae Lynn, cuz she’s got everything I would like to have as a dancer, her attitude toward the sport, the way she moves, she’s a great person off the ice.
What’s it like having Nikolai do the choreography?  And working with Shae?  Tara: amazing!  We worked with Shae and Nikolai and she did the majority of my steps for the free dance, and it’s all her, and watching her do it and then…watching somebody I idolize doing my program its amazing because I want my program to look exactly the way she did it, and I know what it’s supposed to look like, it was amazing to work with her, she’s been through so much, and she knows so much.  Tyler:  He just showed us a lot more compassion than we were used to from going to work with Igor Shipland, it was very different because he didn’t want us going away with anything that was uncomfortable , anything that we couldn’t skate immediately, anything we didn’t like, he was very sensitive to our wants and needs and I really appreciated that.  Tara: with Igor it was more like it seemed like it was a paycheck, and he’d have to throw together a program, and we’d just come back with it in pieces With Nikolai, he  was really really concerned that it was comfortable and that we liked it and could skate it properly.  Even before we videoed any of the pieces we had to practice it a million times so it was good enough, so it was to his standard to tape it, so it was really nice.
Award and bursaries?  Tara:  We’ve got Petro Canada scholarships for school to give us  a little bit of money for school, Kurt Browning and Tri Mark investments after we won junior. Tyler: other things from central Ontario and stuff….
