DANCING AT DAVIE!
We're all about...
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
SPRING 2006
The spring semester is underway with much excitement generated for the newly formed SPRING DANCE CO.The experimental class is designed to train dancers to dance and choreograph. The idea is to generate much material to be performed throughout the semester. The class is comprised of a vast variety (we celebrate the individual!) of 14 dancer/artists interested in performance as well as choreography. We began the semester with each student choreographing and introducing themselves through the "Who am I?" study. Next, each student was assigned the task of choreographing their "favorite dance" style to share. Then  the class was divided into trios to begin our study of style. Each trio drew a dance style from the hat to begin composing "style dances" based on modern, jazz, ballet and hip hop.
Performance dates are being set for later spring to give us a chance to do lots of choreographing early in the semester! We are planning several "gigs" to, not only share the NCSCS with the community, but also to give students an opportunity to create and present their own work in a performance venue. Tentatively planned for early March, the CO. is preparing for
"ARTISTS' SHORTS", the high school students' chance to present to teenagers,  issues that concern teenagers. Adults are welcome but you must be accompanied by a teenager!!
Next, we have been invited to participate in the 2nd round of
THE BATTLE OF THE BANDS, scheduled for Saturday, February 28th at 7:00 at the BROCK PERFORMING ARTS CENTER in downtown Mocksville, NC! We will be throwing down some entertaining and effusive movements some like to call hiphop. We just call it DANCE!,

CONCERTS
The fFall and Spring dance concerts are  scheduled for a five-day  week in December and in May. Typically, we schedule a run through rehearsal at the Brock Performing Arts Center from 3:30-6:00, Monday and Tuesday after school. We continue with a Tech rehearsal Wednesday night (in costume) from 5:00-9:30; and a full run-through Dress Rehearsal Thursday night from 5:00-9:30. The final performance is usually  held on Friday night,  "rising" at 7:00!
Student dancers need to arrive in costume and make-up by 6:15 on the night of a performance. Additionally, the House Manager askes that our audience  wait in the lobby until the house opens at 6:30 unless we are trouble shooting. We will make every effort to seat you as soon as possible and we will also try to present the best possible concert!
Thank you in advance for your understanding!
SPRING DANCE COMPANY...
and other classes often travel to the Brock for rehearsals since we do not have our own theatre  at school.
AUDITIONS for Spring Dance Company:
will be held twice a year; February and November. Company members must audition each year to remain in the company and also must take the next course in sequence. All interested students must auditon and enroll in the appropriate sequential course for Fall.
For example:

DANCE II --2004
All classes are digging into the concepts of "BEST":
BODY, ENERGY, SPACE & TIME! (The elements of dance).
Dance II is embarking on their choreographic introductions into the seven categories as springboards for movement utilized in preparation for Dance III. Together students are structuring dances based on an analysis of their favorite songs (one of the seven categories). We began by sharing favorite songs, and then anaylysing them more thoroughly, highlighting the action verbs present in each song. Next, we combed through to find the images, nouns and adjectives, that could be expressed later in movement. Finally, we discussed the mood or feeling of the entire song. The next step is to improvise movements and gestures, to be built into phrases based on the action verbs, images and mood. Next, we will select movements to begin telling our movement story whether, abstractly or literally.
Dance I
These classes are learning warm up movements that require a range of motion introducing concepts such as flexion, extension and rotation. Some classes are discussing the differences and connections between hiphop and modern dance. All classes are beginning to explore choreographic tools as we discover new forms with multiple meanings to express the world around us!

Dance III & IV...
truly represent our emerging choreographers' course as student dancers  are  busy creating, expressing and communicating for their individual studies. Based on seven categories, as springboards for ideas and structure, students are exploring multiple methods for utilizing the elements of dance. Each dancer is required to extend one of the studies into a full dance work and several will be selected to "premier" in the
Fall Dance Concert.
Additionally, students dancers have been studying improvisation by not only learning the beginning stages of  movement invention but by planning and leading their own improvisations to inform their work. It is a very exciting time!
Dance I...
We have just concluded 3rd quarter where these newcomers to dance have been studying the concept of building movement phrases by exploring the concepts associated, primarily with space; from locomotor and nonlocomotor movements, to pathways, levels of space, positive and negative space, shapes, directions in space.
For the 3rd quarter project the student dancers were given a challenging shape on the low level of space to choreograph their way out of, so to speak, in 16 counts, then they added an explosive locomotor movement that took them away from their starting position. The work turned out really nicely so we have decided to link the phrases and include them in the concert.
Please see exam schedule for week of June 4-7.
