Welcome back !
Mrs. Winchell has returned and Mrs. Sheretz is dancing in Los Angeles, California!
This year the Dance I & II classes hosted the High School Dance Festival, in September, inviting area schools with dance programs to join us for a day of dance. Guest artist Karla Finger-Coghill, the artistic director and choreographer for
Sidelong Dance of Winston-Salem, NC gave master classes during the day and a formal concert that evening including the HS dancers on stage as we shared the work created at the festival. Mineral Springs Middle School, under the direction of Noel Grady-Smith, presented a piece to open the concert and the company showcased several works making for a very exciting evening of modern dance!! For many of the students this was their first modern dance performance experience.
In December the DHS Fine Arts Department presented their end of the semester work in a concert entitled "A Gift of Dance", presented  at the beautiful Brock Performing Arts Center. The students were engaged in creating an original story incorporating all of the dances constructed this semester,
from hiphop, to ballet, jazz, tap, Latin, Irish, and Italian.

Dance I
"From the Streets"
The concert began with 3 hiphop pieces choreographed by the students. Intially, students simply constructed an 8-count hiphop phrase to which they taught a partner. Next, they were instructed to write down the phrase and submit their ideas into a hat where designated students drew a total of only 4-eight count phrases. Groups were formed and students had to work within the limitations of the same 32 count phrase where they were allowed to mix up, chop-up the movement, use reptition and various other choreographic tools.Sort of the "tossed salad approach" to choreography was encouraged.
Spring Concert
"DanceMatters!"
