The Naughtons: Beginnings of a Dynasty

By Patrick Pacheco

First, the Barrymores, now the Naughtons. Patriarch James Naughton is the silver-haired, silver-tongued lawyer in the musical hit revival of "Chicago" at the Shubert Theatre. Son Greg is the actor-manager of the Blue Light Theatre Company who plays Proteus in its production of "The Two Gentlemen of Verona" Sunday through March 16 at The Theatre at St. Peter's Church (at Citicorp, Lexington Avenue at 53rd Street, Manhattan). Daughter Keira has a walk-on in the Roundabout Theatre's current revival of "The Three Sisters" and will follow it with a larger role in "All My Sons" there later this season. And matriarch Pam Naughton is Blue Light's director of development.

"Mom's really the only sane influence in the family; she's not an actor," quips 28-year-old Greg. "Her background in social work keeps us all from flying off the deep end." Good friends of the Naughtons are Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward who are on the board of advisers for the Blue Light. Woodward, who seems to be on a campaign to revive the sagging reputation of Clifford Odets, directed Odets' "Golden Boy" last season for the company and will stage his "Waiting for Lefty" for them from April 19-May 18. "She has a real passion and talent for his work," Greg Naughton says of Woodward.
