It all started in seventh grade algebra, when (1) I was bored, and (2) I'd just read Ann Crispin's introduction to "Yesterday's Son," where she simply said that one becomes a writer by writing. I pulled out my notebook, and two of my best friends were born.
I imagined the stack of bricks on a table in our living room. "Let me introduce you to an island: a small community of about two hundred people on a world that's not our own," I wrote in my notebook.
When I finished and typed that story, I knew that I was playing around more than writing anything for publication. But by then the stories had grown to be more and more fanciful, and I'd found myself attracted to a particular pair of characters: Princess Katie and Prince Jason. Out of all the Lego people I used to play with, those two were not my first choices to write about--I had no idea they would become as important as they did.
This is my spot for work that will never be professionally published. This is my place to experiment and dream. And this is still where I show that I really, truly love my Princess Katie and Prince Jason, whether or not I ever understand them.
Welcome to the imaginary world that I created in my childhood, that I roam through and treasure as a woman. I hope you like it here. |
