Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada, on September 29, 1862. He married Carrie
Estelle Roberts on March 11, 1884 in Prescott, IVichigan. Their marriage was
the first white couple recorded in Prescott. Prescott was just becomming a
village as it had been a lumber camp up to this time. The marriage was
performed by Mortimer Noble, Justice of the Peace. Witnesses were James Gregg
(soon to be Dicks brother-in-law) and Katie Gilroym Carrie was born on June 25,
1867 in Belmont, New York. In the 1900 Michigan Census, Dick and Carie were
living in Mason Township of Arenac County. The 1903 Plat Plan of Arenac County
shows the family living on the southwest corner of County Line and Black Rd.
The family later moved to Prescott where Dick owned the Richland and the
Weishuhn Hotel. He at so owned a hotel in Hale called the Hale-Lake-House. He
also had a store and a bar in Prescott about 1910-1915. In the 1920's when all
the lumber had been cut down, the hotel business slumped. Also people were
driving cars new and not riding the trains. Ey tne way, the train dead ended in
Prescott and Dicks hotel was just accross the tracks so business was good until
the lumber was all cut. Dick and family moved to Bay City, Michigan in 1924.
Dick and his sons Harvey, and Cloy went into the auto repair business on
Madison Aver and called the business, Standard Auto Repair. After a few years,
the partnership split up and Cloy opened up a Pontiac Dealership in Kakawin,
Michigan. Uncle Dick and aunt Carrie lived in a large house at 1200 Madison
aye, and it was a favorite, stopping off place for Weishuhn' s heading north

for many years. He had a hotel in Hale, Michigan in 1901 and also one at
Prescott, Michigan. He traveled back and forth by horse and buggy. His first
hotel was a wooden structure (called the Hanlon House) that he bought from
Peters Hanlon, the father of his son in law William Hanlon. This hotel was
across the street from the rail road station and it burned down. He also had a
Brick hotel at a later date in Prescott, followed by a grocery store. Florence
Weishuhn told me that uncle Dick had a pair of pet goats that had the run of
his place. and they would go into the hotel after her husband Harvey when he

By M.P. LeRoy, Secretary
SEAL Recorder of the General Land Office.

Recorded; Patent Number 599314, filed February 14, 1918
at 9:10 A. M. Recorded in Deed Book #99, page 169.

The above Land Patent was one of many land transactions of Ike Weishuhn.
Between 1917 and 1956, Ike owned twelve other parcels of land in the Stuart
area.

Ike built a house and a Fish Camp on Jupiter Island and farmed several acres.
Wealthy vacationers frcm the north would stay at his Fish Camp and he would
take them fishing in the area. He had a one cylinder gas engine boat that he
used to travel back and forth from Stuart to Jupiter Island. Also family
members have told me that he had a knack for growing fine vegetables on his
homestead. Ike was a man of strong likes and dislikess If he liked you, he
would do anything for you. As an example he had tenants who he liked, so he
didnt bother to collect the rent. On the other hand, family members have
stopped to see him and he tell them to leaves He wrote to his niece,
Lena(Weishuhn)McKay and her husband Bon and asked them to come to Florida,
which they did. Don took a job in Stuart and they stayed there three years.
Other family members who lived in Stuart at some time or other were Richard
(Uncle Dick) Weishuhn and his family. Another incedent that I want to mention
is that he liked to fish and he was with his nephew, Sammy Lane in a flat
bottom boat and a large Manatee (Water Cow) came up under the boat and upset
it, dumping Ike and Sammy in the water. Ike never married. Ike contracted
Cancer in his later years and suffered very much. The Cancer was in his Throat
and Pancreas and he died in Martin County Hospital on October 18, 1956. His
money was all gone and he was forced to give his property to the county to
cover his medical expenses. He is buried in the Weishuhn Plot in Fernhill
Cemetery at Stuart.

Township of Bay County, Michigan. Tom was killed by an explosion of a
gasulline drum on May 2, 1915. A newspaper account of what happened follows.

"Thomas Melrose was instantly killed Sunday afternoon when a tank which he was
examining exploded, the end of the tank striking him in the head. He had
cleaned the tank last week with gasoline, then rinsed it with soap-suds and
closed it up, intending to use it for an oil tank. It was supposed to have been
tested by throwing lighted matches and burning paper into it. While showing
the tank to Henry Selman Sunday, he removed the cap and lighted a match for the
purpose of looking inside the tank, it is thought. There seems to have been
enough gasoline left in the tank to evaporate and fill it under the influence
of the hot sun during the lattar part of the week, and when it was opened and
the flame of the match held near, the explosion resulted. The end was blown out
out cutting the unfortunate mans throat and face badly, and then throwing him
to the ground. The force of the fall broke his arm, and he was probably extinct
when the boby struck the ground. The explosion was heard all over town, and
Mrs. J.F. Brown was the first to arrive, and she aided by Mr. Selman washed off
the blood which was gushing from his eyes, ears, nose, and mouth, and from the
severed jugular vain. More help arrived and the body was carried into the
house. Dr. Bovee was called, and after examination, stated that death was
practically instantaneous. The explosion broke a window in the house and jarred
the surrounding buildings. Mrs. Melrose and the children were sitting within
four feet of the tank when it exploded, were practically uninjured excepting a
few slight burns about the face. Just how the explosion occured will probably
always remain a mystery, as the tank was supposed to be entirely empty."
