Design of the CKGNS Web Site

by Damien Carbery

I designed and implemented the original web site for the Christ the King Girls' Schools.
The web site went live on Saturday 29th March 2003 coinciding with the school's Open Day.
For the open day a copy of the web site was placed on PCs on the school's computer room for parents to browse without incurring dial-up costs and slow download speeds.

Christ the King Girls' Schools contacted Volunteering Ireland looking for a volunteer to design and create a web site for them.
At the same time I contacted Volunteering Ireland looking for a 'virtual volunteer' opportunity and I was told about the Christ the King Girls' School role.
Early February 2003 I contacted the principal and began work on the site.

Being sensitive to the relatively slow speeds of dial-up modems I kept the file size of all graphics files was down (max dimensions around 800x600).
I thought about using some Flash on the home page but the PCs in the school's computer room did not have the Flash player installed so it would have been useless (especially for the Open Day).
I was given the NCTE (National Centre for Technology in Education) booklet 'Be Safe on the Net' to read up on privacy and other issues related to publishing work and pictures of pupils on the Internet. Quite eye opening.

The CKGNS banner text on the front page was generated at Cooltext.com.
The concept of using icons to represent each class was provided by one of the teachers.
I used ImageMagick and a perl script that I wrote to generate the pages of thumbnails used throughout the site.

The teachers all contributed material and comments to the site during development.
It was fun to do and it is great to use my experience to help others.

Obviously I have listed this project in my CV.
