Today, the Cedar Falls dam enjoys a popularity not unlike that of esteemed Mayor Jon Crews, but it was not always that way. Only a few short years before, "the dam" was unheard of, and its cosmetic appearance was less than attractive. Originally, Cory Heisterkamp, Dave Cox and Micah Pruisner decided to undertake the task of dam restoration to fulfill a credit for Jewel Hays' ALPHA program. But more importantly, restore the former glory that the monument deserved. A meager showboard was tossed together but plans never progressed due to Stachovic's iron-fisted rule. The dream stagnated until one fine spring day in 1999. The dream team took it upon themselves to revitalize the dam in any way possible.
To celebrate the newly renovated area, a Damfest was held, May 20th, 1999. To counter the cost of upkeep and to provide food and beverage, Damfest is held yearly to garner donations to help keep the dream alive and to celebrate what's been accomplished. But more than that, it's a chance for everyone to get back together after another semester of classes and to kick off the summer right. This year's turnout is anticipated to be the biggest yet.
There were obstacles along the way, disrespectful fishermen and the occasional vandal, yet the dam shines bright, like a beacon over the Cedar, standing as a testament to all of us.
I urge you to stop by Damfest this year, May 17th, and have a brat by the riverside while chatting it up with old friends!
