| What are you going to do in order to regain control? Mike's words come back to me as I relinquish thoughts of Shante and continue walking up the stairs. Regain control? Mike was right; I have lost control. That realization becomes all too clear as soon as I plant my foot on the last step. Frozen, I stare at the door of my apartment. The secret I've been hiding from everyone for months has finally caught up with me. I knew this day would come, I just didn't think it would be today. I told him I'd have his money next pay day. The credit card bills, ridiculous shopping sprees, and unpaid rent have all led to this moment--the moment where I can no longer hide from the consequences of my actions. There, in front of me, lies the truth. My ugly reality, attached to my front door. Slowly, I walk the few short steps required to make it the rest of the way home. I peel off the eviction notice that is taped to the door and gently place my key inside the lock. Lightly, I push the door open with the palm of my hand. With a heavy foot, I step inside, and close the door. |
