In a collection of essays, poems, recipes and inspirational pieces, Gumbo for the Soul tells African-Americans exactly what the recipe for a good life is. One of my favorites, "Literacy of History is Crucial," by Ryan Christopher Pinkston, reminds us that without a foundation we have nothing to build upon so it is important that we know our history to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past. "Fear of Being Labeled Smart" by Halima Lee, follows in the same vein. Because we have forgotten our ancestors and their great accomplishments, we have let popular culture befuddle our minds, making us think popularity is more important than academic achievement. Sharon Shaye Gray, in "Boys and Girls," gives a lesson in kindness. If we are in a place of authority, such as the school system, we should be kind to the students. They need it even if they have made a mistake.

"Under the Baobab Tree" by Ja Adams is a great poem pointing out that we weren't always slaves and downtrodden but came from the first people, and we have magnificent ancestors to build on. Gumbo for the Soul by Beverly Black Johnson succinctly brings out our stellar history in this country. The inspirational pieces are beautiful stories that let us know God is with us no matter what. The gumbo recipes begged to be tried for dinner.

This collection of writings is inspirational and uplifting. I can't think of a better book to read when depression and a sense of meaningless in this world overtakes your soul. Yes, we face many obstacles in the United States today as descendants of slaves, and some teachers and principals have a low opinion of our ability to achieve, but these stories let you know in no uncertain terms, that we can achieve. We have achieved in the past and we will continue to be a great people regardless of the obstacles thrown in our path. I recommend this book for people of all ages, colors and aspirations. It will change your outlook for sure.
