VINTAGE Day in Knockanure on Sunday August 16th, as usual a wide range of items will be on display, it is also a great day to meet friends and neighbours from far and wide, some take their holidays to coincide with the Vintage day.
Knockanure Community Centre;  Cake Sale in aid of the Centre will be held on the Annual Vintage Day, August 16th Donations of bread, cakes etc.  Would be very much appreciated. MOON: NASA and The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company have developed an airless tire to transport large, long-range vehicles across the surface of the moon. Thursday morning last part of the Moon passed through the outer region of Earth's shadow darkening of the lower half of the Moon. It occurred between 1am and 2am. METEOR Shower began over the weekend and reaches its peak on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning.

PALLOTINE: The Irish Pallotine Province was establisher in 1909. Since then nearly 200 Irish Pallotine Priests and Brothers have gone on the missions abroad, the order was founded in 1835 and now have 10,000 members around the world.
MACKILLOP: Bishop David Cremin was the chief celebrant at a Mass in Granagh Church on Friday, August 7th to honour Blessed Mary MacKillop who founded The Sisters of St. Joseph,   Blessed MacKillop , born in Australia of Scottish parents, founded an order of nuns whose mission was to work in educating children of the outback in Australia. 700 Irish women joined the order and travelled to Australia. Bishop Cremin has close relationship with Knockanure.
PENNY: Aug. 2, 2009, marked the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln penny, last year over five billion pennies were made in the U.S.
HISTORY: 1911 Census for England and Wales is due to be online shortly; Clare Journal reports on March 9th 1809 the death of Eleanor Scanlon in Athea aged 110 years the mother of the late Batt Scanlon, she lived in three centuries; Snippets from Kerryman of May 8th 1908; Mary Brendan Walsh of Tralee, Miss Crowley and Miss Galvin joined the Mercy Sisters at Bodmin in diocese of Plymouth; Miss Minnie O Connor of Ballybunion married John Logan of Galway in New York; Top Grade butter limited, weather harsh and limited vegetation growth. June 26th 1909 Kerryman carries an exciting report on the eviction of Richard Walsh of Kilmurry and his repossession, his landlord was Gun Mahony, Herald of Arms Dublin Castle; Eleven lives lost in boating accident in Killarney, nine tourists were on board; Rev Garrett Pierse of Lisselton made his public defence for his Doctor of Divinity at Maynooth, other Kerrymen who received degrees at Maynooth were Rev Con Cremin, Mr James O Sullivan and Daniel O Sullivan. Kerryman of July 17th 1909 gives a long list of winners at Listowel Feis held in favourable weather, President of the Feis Committee was D. J. Flavin and among the Vice Presidents was also a local man M.J. Nolan. All the local convents had winners on the day, Tullamore School was mentioned several times and some from Athea, Abbeyfeale, Ballyhahill and Foynes won prizes also; Letter writer calls for a library in Listowel; Death took place after a long illness of Nellie Gertrude Malone of Church Street, Listowel, she was daughter of Michael Malone and John Lyons was her grandfather.
PILGRIMAGE WALK:  You are invited to join Fr Billy O�Carroll for a Pilgrimage Walk to the Mass Rock at Milltown on Saturday, August 15th.  The walk leaves the Dominican Church at 11am and goes to the Mass Rock via the Old Castlemaine Road.  Pilgrims arrange their own transport home after Rosary .

MASS at Kilnaughtin Churchyard August 14th at 7.30pm. Big crowds attended the graveyard masses in the Parish last week, it was great to see the care that people give to their graves, and the committee have done Trojan work over the years to reach the present perfection. All involved in the preparation and helpers on the evening of the Masses deserve out thanks, we should also remember families who came long journeys to attend. DEATH took place on August 3rd `09 of Martin Sheehy of Glennalappa East, Moyvane; he was born to John Sheehy and Johanna Ahern in 1911. Martin had siblings Edel, Mary, Jim and Paddy who went to America, while Bill, Tead and Hannie Mulvihill lived in Ireland. Martin is survived by his wife Noreen Ahern whom he married in 1953, his sons John, James and Patrick and daughters Joan and Mary. Requiem Mass for Martin Sheehy was celebrated in Moyvane Church on Thursday August 6th `09, feast of the Transfiguration by Fr John Lucid P.P. assisted by Fr Pat Moore and Fr Joe Finan, the Flaherty Family assisted by members of the Moyvane choir sang during the mass. Martin Sheehy was laid to rest at Ahavoher Graveyard beside his brother Bill who died in Dec. 1990.The weather being nice with a gentle breeze people lingered for some time exchanging the many memories they had of Martin and his lively sayings.

BEST Wishes to  Paddy Reidy of the the Bicycle Shop, Abbeyfeale who has retired from the Abbeyfeale Fire brigade after  38 years service, Paddy�s charitable work includes supporting  St. Ita�s Wrenboys� under the leadership of founder members Paddy Finucane of Knockanure and Mike Lynch, the group over the past 15 years have raised E40,000 to support two local priests in their Missions in Africa and Mexico. Entertainment at the retirement party for Paddy at the Fr Casey Clubhouse was provided by several musicians including the Finucane Family of Knockanure.

FULL Moon on August 6th; our weather is again going from poor to worse. Mars was at its closest point to us on Tuesday 4th of August. A piece of the planet Mars in the National Museum of Ireland for its new meteorite display is valued at E25,000. GREEN: Belarus Government and the Irish Company Greenfield are investigating the possibility of growing bio-fuel material near the Chernobyl Nuclear plant.
The Irish government are spending E20 million promoting Zero Carbon Homes.
History; Mary Spring Rice had an article in the July 23rd 1919 edition of the farmers Gazette on training the young on how to start gardening at National Schools; John Flanagan aged 41 years made a record throw of the hammer on July 24th 1909 the distance was 184 feet 4 inches; Queen Victoria arrived at Cork on August 1st 1849 for an official visit; James Fitzmaurice Fitzgerald arrived at Kerry coast in July 1579 with expedition from Pope Gregory X111 and Spain, Most of the troops were massacred in November 1580, supervised by Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Edward Denny. English army was under command of Lord Grey de Wilton.  The Edmund Spencer and Hugh O�Neill were present at the massacre. Pope Clement appointed Oliver Plunkett Primate of Ireland in 1669; they were only two bishops in Ireland at the time. 1,000 people attended the first Annual Remembrance Day for Oliver Plunkett in Chicago on July 12th 1959, when St Oliver was canonised on the 12th of October 1975 he became Irelands first canonised saint in 700 years.

DIED August 1st `09 aged 111 Harry Patch, he was wounded in 1917. Harry was Britain's last survivor of the trenches of World War I.
DEATH has taken place of Bridie Stackpoole in her 74th year; she is survived by her husband Jack, sons John, Tom, Peter and Dan, daughters Hannah and Helen. Mass for Bridie Stackpoole was celebrated in Athea Church on Saturday August 1st `09 by Fr. Patrick Bowen P.P. Athea assister by Canon Kelly, Fr John Lucid, Fr Gerard O Leary and Fr Tim O Leary and Fr Tom McMahon. Following Mass Bridie was laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery Athea beside her sister Mary B. Sheahan who died on June 1st 1993 aged 69 years. Bridie was a daughter of Hannah Hartnett of Abbeyfeale and Jack Sheahan of Lower Athea where Bridie lived all her life; she married Jack Stackpoole in 1956. The Flaherty of Knockanure sang the hymns at the Mass.

VINTAGE Day in Knockanure on Sunday last was a great day out for all, plenty to occupy a person, from Hand knits, various edibles, sports, and displays from carbide lamps to a grand display of threshing machines. Great credit to all the voluntary workers in preparing the field organising the exhibits, thanks to the McElligott family and sponsors for a day that satisfied everybody including many visitors from abroad. Sympathy was expressed t M J Nolan on the death of his wife; James Nolan of Tralee died, mourners include Mrs Hegarty daughter, Mr B Nolan son, D. J Nolan nephew, and Mrs T Mangan niece. Mrs Daniel Danaher of Killarda died her cousins included Woulfe, Dillon and McSweeney.
