Jan 23rd notes



Death has occurred of Sheila Broderick of Coolnaleen on January 12th 03. Sheila was daughter of Joseph Stokes and Elizabeth O Keeffe of Gortdromagowna, Knockanure. Sheila Broderick is survived by her husband John Broderick children Joe, Katherina, Declan and Eilish, daughter in law Elane Shine, grandchildren Amy and David, brother Sean and sister Queenie. Requiem Mass for Sheila was concelebrated in St Mary's Listowel on Monday last by Fr Crean Lynch assisted by Fr Mc Mahon Knockanure, Fr Shine Moyvane, Fr Maher Asdee and Fr O Neill. Brian Carr cousin who was accompanied on the Organ by Stephen Donegan sang hymns. A beautiful poetically composed touching letter written by Sheila's family was read to the congregation.  
After Mass the day being dry with a stiff breeze many walked after the Hearse to the New Cemetery in the Ballybunion road where Sheila Broderick was laid to rest.


The Board of Management of Knockanure National School wishes to extend its deepest sympathy to the husband, family, brother and sister of the late Sheila Broderick [nee Stokes] who died recently.

Recent deaths: Bridie Windle Barragougeen and Mrs Jane Burke nee Windle England and late of Upper Aughrim.

03 Jan 16 Knockanure
The violent death of three young men in a car crash has shocked the locality. Their passing has left a void in the community, which will remain forever.
Death of Christopher O Connor driver of the car aged 25 years of Colnalaught Listowel son of Margaret and Jim O Connor and brother of Tommy, John, Jane and Margo. Christopher was laid to rest at Listowel Churchyard on Thursday following Requiem Mass in St Mary's Listowel.
Death of James Culhane passenger aged 30 years of Leitrim Middle son of Mossie and Mary and brother of Elizabeth and Caroline. Requiem Mass for James was Celebrated in the Church of the Assumption Moyvane on Thursday interment took place afterwards at Ahavoher Cemetery.
Death of Patrick Galvin passenger aged 34 years of Leitrim East Moyvane son of Eileen and the late Brendan Galvin brother of John, Tom, Gerry, Eddy and Mike.
Patrick Galvin was laid to rest at Ahavoher Cemetery on Friday following Requiem Mass at the Church of the Assumption.

Death: Of Catherine Kennedy nee Nash daughter of Paddy Nash and Margaret Moore of Knockanure. Catherine is survived by her husband Joe Kennedy Sheffield sons John and Joe and sister Sheila in Knockanure. Brothers Bill, Jim, Ned, Moss and Michael predeceased Catherine Kennedy who was a niece of Nell Moore Sacristan of old Knockanure Church.

Death: Took place on Sunday 22nd of Dec 02 of Michael Collins of Lisaniskea son of Joe Collins and the late Margaret Ahern. His brother John and sisters Eileen and Catherine survive Michael. Michael Collins remains were removed from Finucane's Funeral Home to Corpus Christi Church Knockanure on Christmas evening and Fr Fleming assisted by Fr Michael Daly cousin, Fr Mc Mahon a neighbour and Fr O Leary of Athea concelebrated Requiem Mass for the repose of his soul on St Stephens Day. Sean Ahern of Moyvane and Margaret Carroll of Athea sang a lovely selection of Hymns. Michael Collins was laid to rest at Ahavoher after Mass attended by his many friends and relations.   


Feb 6th notes

Death has taken place of Sean Histon of Dirreen  in St Ita's Newcastlewest Sean was born in 1925 son of John Histon of Dirreen who died October 1960 and Margaret Casey of Knocknisnaw who died August 1968. Requiem Mass for Sean Histon was Celebrated in St Bartholomew's Church Athea by Fr O Leary assisted by Fr Madden. Sean was laid to rest among generations of his ancestors in Knockanure Old Churchyard beside the wall and just west of the door of the ancient church his only sister died as a young girl. Sean Histon was known far and wide as a great and reliable historian.
Death: of Sr. Peter Hudson Mercy Sister who gave years of service as Matron of Listowel Hospital. Sr. Peter called Hannah was born in Kilbaha a daughter of Ned Hudson and Hannah Hanrahan. Sr. Peter had one brother William and sisters Margaret, Mary, Bridget, Nora and Eileen. The remains of Sr. Peter lay in repose at St Bridget's Church in the Hospital grounds Listowel all day on Thursday last where great numbers came to say their last goodbye after Requiem Mass in St Mary's Listowel Parish Church on Friday January 31st Sr. Peter Hudson aged 82 years was laid to rest at the Balloonagh, Mercy Convent Grounds, Tralee.
Death: of Mrs Bridget Windle nee Mc Mahon aged 86 years her parents were Dan Mc Mahon and Mary Dillane Bridget.   Sisters Mrs Tess Stack and Mrs Nellie Woods mother of Jerry Woods Knockanure survives Mrs Bridget Windle.

Feb 13 Notes

Death has taken place of Humphrey Doody of Kilmorna son of Humphrey Doody and Catherine Fitzmaurice who came from Lixnaw. The late Humphrey was married to Nora Duffy of Mayo and his brother Bill was married to her sister Kate Duffy, other siblings includes Pat who lives in Kilmorna with his wife Betty Mc Kenna, Eddie who married Sheila Brosnan of Kilmorna, Mick was in the army married Maisie O Brien of Mullingar, Nora Doody married Peter O Halloran of Athea, Nell Doody married Jim Cassidy of Slane , Kathleen Doody married Dick Lewn of Slough and Jim Doody the youngest of the family died three years ago was only three years old when his father died. One by one all the family went to live in Slough on Sunday afternoons they would all meet at a Bar called the Three Sons.

Feb 20 notes
Death has taken place of Mickey Reidy of Glasha  born 1914  all his brothers and sisters have predeceased him. Requiem Mass for Mickey was celebrated in St Bartholomew's Church Athea on Saturday last the 15th of February  by Fr Madden PP assisted Fr O Leary and Fr O Keeffe at the Offertory a sod of turf ,cap and pipe were presented each had a story to tell about his life. Maura Ahern Sullivan rendered the hymns with feeling and clarity later Donie Sullivan played some airs on the Side flute.
Mickey Reidy was laid to rest at Timpleathea Churchyard beside his parent's, brothers and sisters. Mickey's siblings included John, James, Tom, Eileen, Catherine Hannah, Margaret and Nora Sexton who lived in Knockanure, Their parents were James Reidy and  Nana O Connor. Also buried in the family grave is their uncle Paddy Reidy of Toureendonnell.


March 6th notes
Death on 26th of Feb 03 of Eamon Sweeney aged 82 years born Carrueragh son of Edmund Sweeney and Lil Brandon, Eamon is survived by his wife Margaret Flavin and children Pat in Athea, Eamon in Glin, Breda John, Gene and Pascal all Moyvane. His brothers and sisters included John, Mollie, Mick, Tom, Peg, Dan, Breda and Jimmy in York. . Eamon Sweeney was laid to rest at Ahavoher after Requiem Mass at 12 Noon in the Church of the Assumption Moyvane on Saturday March 1st. Eamon was a Postman in the district for about 35 years. Eamon played football with Knockanure , Duagh and Castleisland.

March 27th 03 notes

Death of Mary Quaid of Dirreen and Manchester a daughter of Sonny Quaid and Nora Ahern, Mary is survived by brothers Billy, Jim, Michael, Denis and Tom sisters Nora Mary, Ellen and Breda her sister Margaret predeceased her. Mary Quaid was laid to rest in Knockanure Old Churchyard among her ancestors on Friday 21st of March after Requiem Mass in Athea.

Death of Joe Collins of Lisaniskea aged 89 years born Ballycommane son of Michael Collins and Ellen Connell of Kilmanahan , Joe married Margaret Ahern of Ballylongford 65 years ago their children  John, Eileen and Catherine survive their parents, their son Michael died suddenly on 22nd of December 02 aged 63 years.
Joe Collins had 15 brothers and sisters who predeceased him namely Denis, Pat, Jim, Michael, Bernard, Dan, Bridget, Mary, Margaret, Ellen, Ita, Josie, Betty and Julia. Requiem Mass was Celebrated in Knockanure Church for Joe Collins the chief celebrant was Fr Michael Daly son of his half twin Ita Collins Daly, Fr Fleming PP, Fr Mc Mahon a neighbour, Fr O Leary retired PP and Cannon Kelly of Athea assisted at the Mass. Mrs Cunningham played the Organ and Sean Ahern cousin sang the Hymns. Joe Collins was laid to rest at Ahavoher on March 24th 03 beside his son Michael and his wife Margaret who died 6th of November 1996.

April 10-2003 notes
Death has taken place in Australia of Jean Jackson mother of Dawn Murphy of Kilmeaney.
Death of Billy O Brien aged 80 years in London Billy was a frequent visitor to his mother's family in Trien.
Death of Sr. M Carmel Murphy of Presentation Convent born 82 years ago in Listowel to Thomas Murphy {who's nickname was Colonel Murphy} and Jane Terryman . Sr. Carmel is survived by her brother Tom and sisters Maura and Eleanor, she was Professed in England in 1941 after Profession she spent 33 years in India and Pakistan . It was a delight to hear he recount her time among the Indian people. Sr. Carmel Murphy was laid to rest in the Presentation Convent Cemetery after Requiem Mass on Thursday April 4th.
Death took place in London of Michael Lane of Kilmeaney son of Denny Lane who came from near Glenquin Castle,  and Nell Ahern of Knockanair Athea. His brothers Aenus, Denny, Bill and Joe sisters Nora, Bridget, Eileen and Mary survive Michael, brothers Pat and Jack predeceased him.

Notes April 24th 03
Death :of Michael Cunningham of Keylod, born Donegal son of James Cunningham and Bridget Kennedy he is survived by his wife Sheila Nolan son Martin, daughter Heather brother Denis sisters Mary, Ann and Bridget. Siblings Pat, Seamus and Nora predeceased him. Requiem Mass for Michael was celebrated in St Mary's Listowel on Wednesday 16th of April by Fr O Connor CC Listowel assisted by Fr Fleming PP Moyvane after Mass Michael Cunningham was laid to rest in Listowel Old Churchyard with the Nolan Family.



Death: of Margaret Sheehy of Glenalappa born Dromtrasna Abbeyfeale daughter of Kathleen Sullivan and the Late Denis Crowley. Margaret's Husband John Joe Sheehy, Son Timothy Mother Kathleen, brothers Denis and Jim, sisters Mary Ita, Nora and Kathleen survive her. A huge crowd came to sympathise with the family at Lyons Funeral home on Holy Thursday evening.
Special Prayers for the dead were recited at the Church of the Assumption Moyvane on Good Friday for Margaret Sheehy after wards her remains were laid to rest at Ahavoher Cemetery on a beautiful April afternoon with warm sunshine and a slight breeze.

May 8th 03 Notes
Death: of Joe Healy of Upper Athea son of Tim Healy and Mary Kiely his wife Mary Quinn sons Gerard, Joseph, Tim, Dermot, daughter Patricia, sisters Hannah Murphy and Mary Horgan of Knockanure survive him his brother Martin predeceased Joe.
Requiem Mass for Joe Healy was Celebrated in At Bartholomew's Church Athea on Friday afternoon last by Fr. Madden PP assisted Cannon Kelly, Fr Fleming PP Moyvane and Fr Mc Mahon of Trien.  Margaret Carroll sang the Hymns after Mass Joe's many friends provided a guard of honour.


May 03 notes
Death has taken Place in London of Eileen Gammell nee Hunt born Kilmeaney a daughter of Jim Hunt and Kate O Callaghan, her siblings included Billy, Con, Tom, Eddy, Jack, Margaret, Kit, Nora and Mary.
Eileen Gammell had five children.

Death of Mary Dunfort nee Moore of Glin Road Moyvane on May 12th she was daughter of Molly Mc Evoy and Moss Moore. Her husband John sisters Kitty and Eileen survives Mary, her sister Hanna predeceased her. After Requiem Mass in Moyvane Church Mary Dunfort was laid to rest at Ahavoher Cemetery.

Death: on May 27th 03  of Cathy Stack nee Ferris of Carrueragh daughter of Maurice Ferris and Ann Carmody of Craughdarrig Asdee. Cathy was predeceased by her husband Bob who died 7 years ago she is survived by daughters Ena Kearny Asdee, Anne Prendiville and niece Anne Mulvihill Asdee. Requiem Mass for Cathy was con celebrated at Corpus Christi Church Knockanure on Monday by Fr Fleming PP, Fr Harrington Fossa cousin, Fr O Leary retired PP, Fr O Connor Duagh, Fr Maher Asdee and Fr Keating Newcastlewest. . Hymns were sung by Patrick Mc Elligott Asdee and on Accordion was John Kinsella. After Mass Cathy Stack was laid to rest in the Stack ancestral Tomb in Old Knockanure Churchyard, which was erected in 1836. Cathy siblings Michael May and Ann predeceased her.

Death of Danny Curtin of Lisselton Cross on May 19th son of late Mick Curtin and Maggie Sheehy he is survived by sisters Mary and Catherine. Following Requiem Mass in Ballydonoghue Church Danny Curtin was laid to rest in Gale Churchyard. Danny was Editor of the Ballydonoghue Journal since1999.  Danny was a noted and generous researcher who spent countless hours at Tralee Library. The publication of his historical collection would be a fitting acknowledgment to Danny Curtin.

Death of Nancy Ellis at the residence of her sister in Lower Athea she spent many years in Glin castle. Requiem Mass for Nancy was celebrated in the Church of the Immaculate Conception Glin on Tuesday May 27th. Nancy Ellis was laid to rest in Kilfergus Churchyard.
