ST PIO: Monday evening Mass on May 26th last in Listowel was celebrated by Fr O Connor assisted by Fr Kerin and Fr Ermelindo who was a friend of Padre Pio. The church was packed even the front seats were full well before the mass started, many extra hymns and prayers were recited and people were willing to spend over two hours waiting patiently to be individually blessed by St Pio�s mitten which was enclosed in a special frame. It was noticeable the number of young people and children in attendance.

MAGAZINE: Tarbert Comprehensive School Magazine is now available, it contains over a hundred pages, the theme of the book is It�s a Beautiful Life.
HEALTH: A big crowd of men from Athea and district were at the Colbert Memorial Hall for health checks and advice on Wednesday last several professional health providers were present, the atmosphere was calm and jovial with no obvious sick people present except for some overweight individuals who no doubt got warnings, which will not be heeded except by the slim minority. Absent from the show was the natural health food and vegetarian devotees.

Katerina is daughter of Bridie and the late Richard Sheehan of Moyvane Post Office.
Marriage of Brid Ahern of Leitrim Middle and Willie John Burke of Carlow took place in Moyvane Church on May 23rd `08, Fr Lucid officiated. Best man was Derrick O Donoghue and Groomsman was Leslie Burgess, Bridesmaids Sinead Kennelly and Siobhan O Carroll. Brid is daughter of John Ahern and Nuala Flaherty. The reception was held at Ballygarry House Hotel.
CHURCH: The Catholic Church in England is opting out of adoption agencies because of new laws on same sex couples and the Church in Vietnam is taking a lead from the Buddhists Monks in Burma by protesting on the streets for their rights with rosary beads and crosses.
ROAD Safety Campaign is not getting to the people, who will benefit most from road safety, anything the guards and council say is usually taken with a pinch of salt by seasoned people not to mind the youth, who treat authority with contempt.
HARLEY-Davidson bikers will be in Killarney from 6th to 8th of June, they will also participate in a fundraising event for local charities.
RAIL: The recent rail dispute and the inability to deal with it show that people will tolerate behaviour of well paid people, while the poor man who shouts in the street may end up in jail.
REFERENDUM Day on the Lisbon Treaty is fast approaching, the Referendum Commission booklet is only causing confusion and all the politicians are asking us to be politically correct, a few with points to score are against the treaty and can make sweeping statements and hope to point a finger and say I told you so to all of us next year. The public are treating the subject akin to taking on a stray dog.
AGM of Newtownsandes Co-Op took place on Wednesday night last May 29th, the attendance was below normal, and suppliers were given an account of various possible forecasts for the future. New Zealand dairy farmer�s average income is $900.000. Silage cutting is now making rapid progress, crops being light and the ground dry helps to speed the work.
WRITERS Week make and enjoyable weekend for writers, artists and  patrons of the arts, a packed programme of events took place at various venues , The Arms Hotel, Seanchai, St John�s, Lartigue Museum, Classic Cinema, Kingdom Bar, Plaza Centre and the Mermaids all catered for events. There was something for children every day.

HISTORY: The Kerryman of May 16th 1908 reports the premature death of local young man Peter Nolan of Moyvane House, he was son of M. J. Nolan Vice Chairman of Kerry County Council and temporary inspector local government board, M. J. was also one of the longest serving members of the Listowel Bench. Chief mourners included M.J. Nolan JP, MCC, LGBI and Mrs Nolan, Jer Nolan, Tom Nolan, W Nolan, Mrs Buckley, Mrs D. J. Flavin, ? Brosnan of Newtown, Michael Buckley of Tarmons, aunts Mrs F. Flavin and Mrs J Nolan. A long list of cousins and locals are included in the report. Among the clergy in attendance included Fr T. Lyne CC Newtownsandes, Fr. Keane, Fr Dillon, Fr Walsh, Fr Trant, Fr J Fitzmaurice and Canon Hayes of Ballylongford. The death of Mr Robert I Cutbertson of Listowel who died after a lingering illness is also recorded in the May 16th 1908 issue. Mr Cutbertson was born at Ayrshire, Scotland and was aged 46 years, he lived in Listowel for 28 years, he took in every movement to the benefit of Listowel, burial service Mr Cutbertson was conducted by Canon Pattison.

DEATH took place in Holden Canberra on May 4th 2008 of Fr John O Connor who was born at Rathoran, Duagh 80 years ago to John O Connor and Margaret Dillon. Fr John is survived by brothers Paddy and Liam, sisters Mrs Bess Horgan, Joan McCarthy, Mary Jo O Connor, he was predeceased by siblings Fr Morgan, Davie, Sr. Bridget and Sr. Angela. Fr John O Connor was laid to rest beside his brother Fr Morgan at Woden Cemetery Canberra, Australia.

LISBON Treaty is too complicated for the ordinary voter to handle it is time that some other method of approval be found in future for such a treaty. EU will never be able to compete with countries like Kenya where workers are glad to work for 2 to 3 euro a day, is this one of the reasons why EU development policies in third world countries are probably keeping them backward rather than developing them.
Voting  on the Lisbon Treaty will be held at Knockanure School Thursday June 12th.Voting on Thursday prevents many casting their ballot.

LOUGH Derg has been attracting pilgrims for at least ten centuries and on the June Bank Holiday this year a bus load of pilgrims from Kerry and West Limerick continued the long tradition. Over 20,000 people visit the Island every year, the fine church at  Lough Derg can seat 1,200 and it was consecrated in 1931. Several people are recorded to have visited the Island 40 times for the three day pilgrimage. Mgr Tom Fallon brought a group from Birmingham to Lough Derg for 40 years. Among the locals remembered at the Shrine are Christy Lynch of Lacca Lisselton who died in 2004 aged 81 years, his daughter made 12 pilgrimages and still continues each year also Danny Enright of Tarbert died in 2004 aged 53 years. 50th anniversary of the International Military Pilgrimage to Lourdes was marked in May by the attendance of 1,400 Irish Pilgrims who were among a crowd of 25,000. Spending on arms trade is $1.000 billion.
KNOCK:  Grandparents from all over Ireland will converge on Knock Shrine Co. Mayo on Sunday, September 14th for the second annual National Grandparents� Pilgrimage. The purpose of the pilgrimage is to celebrate the pivotal role of grandparents in the transmission of the faith here in Ireland and it will also honour St. Joachim and St. Anne, the grandparents of Jesus. DEATH took place on Sunday June 1st `08 of David Flynn of Bunagara Listowel; he is survived by his wife Mary Breen, children Eva and Hailey, father Patsy, brothers Johnny, Pat and Aidan. David was predeceased by his mother Anne who died a few years ago. Following Requiem Mass in Duagh Church on Wednesday June 4th `08, David Flynn was laid to rest at John Paul Cemetery Listowel. David was born 36 years ago at Pilgrim Hill, Kilmorna to Patsy Flynn and Anne Houlihan, Anne who was a native of Lisselton.
Death took place on Sunday June 1st `08 of Owen McGillicuddy of Listowel; Owen is survived by his parents Jackie and Mary, Brother Sean, Sister Sarah, grandmother Josephine O Sullivan, uncles and aunts. Following Requiem Mass at St Mary�s Church, Listowel on Wednesday June 4th Owen McGillicuddy was laid to rest at St Michael�s Churchyard Listowel.
Death has taken place of Sr. Maureen Griffin a native of Beale Hill and of St Columban�s Convent Maheramore, Co Wicklow. Sr. Maureen was laid to rest on June 2nd `08; she is survived by her sisters Ciss King and Noreen Dinneen.

FATHERS Day History: First Fathers day said to be held in West Virginia, to remember 361 men killed in an explosion, another Fathers Day proposed by daughter of Civil War veteran, he reared 6 children after his wife died, he lived in Washington State and the Day was held in 1910. In the Nixon Presidency Father�s Day was officially recognised in 1972.
CIVIC Reception was held by Kerry County Council recently to honour Fr David Lupton and Geogie O Callaghan two great men who have worked with young people over the past 35 years in the Manchester area.

Best man was Mike Long, groomsmen were Noel and Marcus Long and Timmy Lynch. Bridesmaids were Margaret Naughton, Orna Donoghue, Kathleen Long and Sheilanne Curtin.  The bride is daughter of Pat and Eileen Lynch and the Groom is son of Mike and the late Bridie Long. The Long Family have many connections with the Parish.

SCHOOL: Kerry Life Education Mobile Unit was at Knockanure N.S. last week, the aim of the Unit is provide information and education to young children. On Wednesday last the children joined school children from other small schools in a sports day in Ballylongford, they had a day off for the referendum on Thursday, two pleasant and relaxed officers were at the Knockanure Poling Booth, the school was nicely decorated with various posters and information leaflets, even a letter from our President is on display. Scholars have a great time with another day off for a school planning day on Friday last.

MUSIC: The Young Musical Friends of  the Thomas Lyndon Foundation  are  holding  musical  workshops for primary school children  in  the Tarbert Comprehensive School on Saturday 28th June The tutors include Denise Wren, Tara Clifford, Aishling Enright, Rachel Clancy and Kate Curran.  The workshops include percussion, singing, song writing, keyboards and jazz. CHURCHYARD Mass held at St Michael�s on Wednesday June 18th `08 attracted a large crowd, the Listowel Choir containing a large group of singers sang to their hearts content on a fine sunny evening, with a hint of chill in the wind, the heavy rain earlier in the day had completely disappeared. Canon Linnane said the Mass and remembered all who were buried in the Cemetery especially the recently deceased. The graves were tidy and chairs were available. The gate collection amounted to E2,389. The group of about twenty who worked over recent days and weeks can be proud of their preparations. DEATH has taken place of Maureen Ahern of Ballygrennan, Listowel, she was predeceased in 1993 by her husband Pat Ahern who was born at Dirreen, Athea in 1928,  Maureen was daughter of Bill Keane and Molly Galvin , Maureen Keane�s siblings include Margaret ,Moss; Gerard; Nora. Maureen is survived by her only daughter Mary, grandson William Kennelly and son in law Matt Kennelly. Following Requiem Mass in Listowel Church on Thursday June 19th `08, Maureen Ahern was laid to rest beside her husband Pat in St Michael�s Cemetery, Listowel. Maureen�s grandmother was Margaret Moore from Keylod, Knockanure.

Liam is survived by his wife and three daughters in England, siblings Noreen, Maura, Stephen and Jim. Brothers Michael and Jer predeceased Liam.   Following Requiem Mass in Knockanure Church Liam Barry was laid to rest at Ahavoher Graveyard beside his parents and brother Jer on Thursday June 19th `08. His father Stephen died in 1990, his mother Bridget died in 1977 and Jer died in 1989.Liam was one of the first altar boys to serve in Knockanure new church.
