DAWN on Sunday morning was beautiful, a small bit cool but dry and a haze over the countryside giving the impression of a vast sea with only the higher points in the landscape jutting through the fog, and then little by little the countryside resurrected from the ground fog to give the countryside back and a brand new sunny day. All the time the birds were competing with each other singing, sorry to say no cuckoo could be heard. The countryside is also blooming with wild flowers.

DEATH took place on June 6th `07 of Mary Hayes nee Nolan of Cappamore, Co Limerick. Mary was born over 90 years ago at Dromurhur, Moyvane to Bill Nolan and Kate Connor who came from Clounbrane. Mary married Paddy Hayes who worked at Listowel Post office, she is survived by their children Donnchadh, Fr Liam in Argentina, Pat, Seamus, John, Tom, Marian and Bernadette, her daughter Angela predeceased her. The principal celebrant at her Requiem Mass was her son Fr Liam a Divine Word missionary. Mary Hayes siblings were Jerry, Eileen and her half twin Hannah.

LOUGH Derg Pilgrimage bus leaves on Friday August 10th, details from 068 31232. A bus load from the district went to Lough Derg on last weekend, despite the showery weather everything went off to the satisfaction to all; even one pilgrim recited a verse about the trip. RETIREMENT: On Friday last 29th June `07 Mrs Helen McEnery principal teacher at Knockanure national school bid farewell to a life long career in education. She saw lots of changes in education down through the years. Helen was dedicated to her method of teaching and treated all children in her care as they were her own. She will be missed both by staff and all her pupils. We all wish her a long and happy retirement. Sl�n leat.

Eucharistic Procession in Listowel on Sunday last was an inspiring occasion for both toddlers and some into their 80s walked the circle of the town in brilliant sunshine praying and soaking up the atmosphere of streets, many windows and several organisations had a display of statues depicting Jesus and Mary in several different ethnic garb, surrounded by flowers and flags. Artistic banners in the parade were much admired, the public address system kept everyone in touch, and cars were banned from the streets during the procession which added to the occasion which ended with Hymns from the Listowel Choir and blessing at the Town Park.

DANCING: Crossroad dancing will be held at the Cross of the Woods on Friday evening July 6, 2007 a great night�s entertainment is guaranteed. This is a historic occasion with music and cross road dancing being re-enacted in an effort to rekindle the ways of times past particularly the 1930s and 40s. The history of the Cross-o-the-Wood dancing along with the musicians that played there is being compiled for posterity sake. KNOCK: A group of locals went to Knock on Wednesday July 11th `07, it was a lovely dry and warm day in Knock, it rained early at home. LOUGH Derg Pilgrimage bus leaves on Friday August 10th, details from 068 31232. A bus load from the district went to Lough Derg on last weekend, despite the showery weather everything went off to the satisfaction to all; even one pilgrim recited a verse about the trip. In the 1846 season it is reported that 30,000 visited the Island by 1860 pilgrims numbers had reduced to 10,000, in an old map of Ireland made in 1492 Lough Derg was one of the principal landmarks.

LOCAL Man Tim O Flaherty known as Tiger took up a new challenge cycling, he recently completed the Ring of Kerry Cycle and is to compete later in the Longford and Dublin Marathon, so far he has completed 17 marathons, his grandfather came from Gortdromagowna, and all his ancestors were well known for their stamina.

KNOCK: A group of locals went to Knock on Wednesday July 11th `07, it was a lovely dry and warm day in Knock, it rained early at home. Between the rosary, hymns and traditional songs the passengers were occupied travelling on the bus, this year Fr Tom McMahon was our spiritual director and brought his own special talents which were greatly appreciated. In Knock many religious activities are taking place in several churches while outside people prayed while they walked around the outside of the old church, Prayer Guidance Centre, Museum, Reconciliation Service, large open parks, water features, several Stations of the Cross and other religious sculptures are all there for the public. The Churchyard where the locals are laid to rest is nearby and among the many that lay there are the Visionaries who saw the apparition in 1879. The New Church at Knock can accommodate 10,000 people and ground floor area is one acre, it was dedicated on July 18th 1976.

Kerryman of July 2nd 1932 continues with Congress articles; Over 1 million attended Mass at the Phoenix park, they were grouped according to locality, boy scouts used their staves, as barriers along the confines of the crowd to prevent overflowing their limits, they had hundreds of pails of water for the thirsty crowd, it was a dry day, prisoners were able to listen to events on radio; people were out from early morning and at 6.30pm they were still cheerful, several collapsed from stress, 3,500 ft of sound film taken of the events; Midnight Mass was celebrated in Listowel and Ballybunion to mark Congress, Ballybunion had buntings across streets and on every house, High Mass in Dublin was broadcast on local wireless;
Transport 4,000 left Kerry by train for the Congress a travelling platform was used with seats in vans to accommodate travellers, no untold incidents, people left Cork at 2.30am, sixty trains on the Great Southern System brought 50,000 people to Dublin, 40,000 arrived at Kingsbridge in 37 trains from all parts of the South, on Sunday from 3.45am a train arrived every quarter of an hour till one o�clock, total passengers by rail 142,000, Boat from cross channel brought 2,000, boat from Larne brought 1,000, Cunard Liner brought 111 for the day, City of Cork brought 274 first class passengers and 160 third class passengers from Cork, 100 busses were used and every other form of transport that could be found, the list continues; Visitors to the Congress just to mention a few, Knockanure man James Kirby visits home after 38 years, he was educated at Knockanure, his parents went to New York in the early 1890s and established a liquor trade business, James Kirby was a nephew of late Mr J Leahy, first cousin of Supt. Eucharistic Procession in Listowel on Sunday last was an inspiring occasion for both toddlers and some into their 80s walked the circle of the town in brilliant sunshine praying and soaking up the atmosphere of streets, many windows and several organisations had a display of statues depicting Jesus and Mary in several different ethnic garb, surrounded by flowers and flags. Artistic banners in the parade were much admired, the public address system kept everyone in touch, and cars were banned from the streets during the procession which added to the occasion which ended with Hymns from the Listowel Choir and blessing at the Town Park.
