FUN CLUB: Knockanure Fun Club at the Community Centre will start on Monday 11th of May `09 and continue on the second Monday of each month from 5pm to 6pm, all are welcome. Nintendo, W11, Playstation 1 and 2, Match Attax, Card Swapping, Table football, Air Hockey and Table tennis. Bring your own hand held games. Why not come and check it out.

PRESENTATION: Last Saturday night a special presentation was made to Bridie Sheahan to mark her retirement from the Post Office, several tributes were paid to Bridie and a picture of the Post Office painted by Mrs Fitzmaurice was presented.





FULL Moon is on May 9th, International Space Station can be seen over the country from May 11th. Farmers are coping with diminishing fodder and wet weather for some time now. It is no surprise that we get bad weather at the coming of the Cuckoo, but this year is extra wet. Apple trees are in full blossom and the whitethorn is about to flower.



HORTICULTURE Grants amounting to E3.8 million have been promised by Minister Trevor Sargent under the National Development Plan 2007-`13.

SURVEY: The Bank of Ireland is doing a survey to gain a greater insight into the level of expense experienced by parents as they put their children through education and how these costs might be managed.





WASTE: It is reported that nearly a ton of unwanted medical products were collected for disposal recently at chemist shops, did anyone estimate the original cost and who prescribed these products, often bought at taxpayers expense.

DEVELOPMENT Plan for Kerry comes into effect on May 4th, no need to comment on it.

Flowergirls were Catherine Rose Enright, Hazel Langan, Chloe and Nicola Magee. Pageboys Cian Enright Barry, and Shane Healy. The bride is daughter of Tom and Ina Culhane and the groom is son Ann and the  late Danny Enright. 

MAHONY of Kilmorna; The Irish Times gives several reports on the family, on 28th of Jan 1893 George Gun Mahony asked the Times to clarify that his brother Mr Pierce Mahony was the youngest son  of the late Mr. P.K. Mahony J.P. of Kilmorna, Co Kerry, his mother was Jane daughter of the lte Mr. Robert Gun Cunningham D.L. of Mountkennedy and his first wife Elizabeth who was the only child and heir of Mr Archibald Hamilton Foulkes of Coolawinna, both of Co Wicklow. His grandfather the late Pierce Mahony of Woodlawn, Co Wicklow was J.P. for Counties Kerry and Limerick. Pierce was married to Ann Matia daughter of Mr. John Maunsell J.P. of Ballyrood, Co. Limerick.

The Times gives extensive coverage to the funeral of Mrs Pierce Mahony in the 31st July 1899 edition, she died at Warren House Sutten and was married for 22 years, following Service at St Bartholomew�s Church Dublin her remains were taken to the train at Kingsbridge where members of the Amnesty Association put the remains on the train which left at 12.30pm for Colbinstown station, then she was transferred to Ballynure Churchyard the ancient graveyard of Killeen Cormac, Grange Con. Grange Con is the seat of David Mahony. The coffin of oak, the only orientation was a brass Latin Cross from head to toe, it bore the inscription Helen Louise wife of Pierce Mahony born July 5th 1853, died July 25th 1899. Labourers from Grange Con lowered the coffin into the grave. A long list of relatives and well known people are given including Sir Arthur Vicars, William and John Redmond M. Ps, Mrs C. S. Parnell, Miss Bertha Creagh, Mr and Mrs J. J. Clancy P. D. Griffin of Listowel, a wreath was sent from Kilmorna. 

DEATH has taken place recently of Frank Woodhead of Sheffield, England husband of the late Margaret Carmody of Knockanure, he is survived by his son Frank Junior, nieces and nephews in Sheffield, Swindon, Cheltenham and Margaret and John  Carmody of Knockanure.

SHROUD of  Turin will be on display from April 10th to May 23rd 2010. A big crowd were at the Cathedral in Killarney to honour and pray at the relics of St Theresa last week, a few from the locality attended.

MAY 13th `09


QUEEN of the May Procession takes place in Knockanure on Sunday May 17th starting at 3.30pm, this year we will remember Spiritual Needs and Consolation. The ceremony will be conducted by Fr Lucid, Fr. McMahon and Fr. O Callaghan assisted by the Knockanure Church Choir and Moyvane Folk Choir, all are welcome.

FIRST Communion Mass was celebrated by Fr Lucid P.P. in Knockanure Church on Saturday last May 9th`09. Congratulations to Leona, Lauren, Amanda, Darragh, Tadgh, Cian, Adam, Evan, Conor and Brian who received their First Communion, they were supported by their families, friends and relations, the church was full and the choir with Stephen Donegan on the organ added to the occasion.



BLESSING of Knockanure GAA Pitch and dressing rooms took place on Sunday last May 10th, the blessing was performed by Fr. Lucid, Fr. McMahon and Fr. O Callaghan, Fr Tom recalled the old days when they played matches on several different local fields and the hard fought Parish League. All the deceased players and helpers were remembered. The First Communion class got a special presentation and Jackie McMahon was presented with a remembrance plaque. Refreshments were served in lovely sunshine while children had fun in the field. GAA celebrated their 125th anniversary on May 10th every club put on something special for the day. Day long activities were held in Listowel and Ballydonoghue pitches.  In Newcastlewest Library every West limerick GAA club have items in a 38 folder display.

GORTAGLANNA: 88th Commemoration of the Gortaglanna Tragedy takes place on Sunday May 17th , assemble at the Bridge at 6.30pm, speaker Jerry Savage. 



BEST of Luck to Special Olympics athletes Tom Windle, Johnny Mulvihill and Edward Twomey who will be competing on Saturday May 16th in the Munster regional Finals at the Mardyke in Cork.



ST MICHAEL�S College are re roofing the school at a cost of E195.000, upgrading their pitch at a cost of E50,000 and giving free laptops to 1st years.

CEILI Band called the Pride of Moyvane is based on the Martin Mulvihill Branch of Comhaltas in New York and Margie Mulvihill is chairperson of the Branch. Margie has a host of relations in this Parish and locality.

CHOIR: The Youth Choir in Moyvane Church deserve our grateful appreciation for the wonderful performance at Sunday morning mass.

BEST Wishes to Garda Michael Queally has retired after 37 years Garda service, Michael spent many years at Moyvane Garda Station, he is married to Noreen and has daughters Valerie, Michelle, Maeve and Clodagh. Guards who retired recently in Abbeyfeale include Willie Galvin, Jerry O Sullivan, Gerard McCarthy, Jerry Lawlor and Pat Walsh.

HAPPY Retirement to Tony Mulvihill who was delivering letters in Lisselton for the past 26 years, his father Jin came from Moyvane. Tony and his wife Bridget will shortly travel to Australia to visit family members.



MARIAN O Sullivan of Knockanure celebrated her 21st birthday on Saturday night last in Moyvane, she is daughter of Pat and Helen O Sullivan.



WEATHER: The Environmental Protection Agency, say that our future weather to be much the same as  the predictions of National University of Ireland, Maynooth  and Met Eireann, they forecast a 2 degree increase in average temperature in 100 years time, what we all know is that they are unable to tell us next weeks weather at present. What did it cost the taxpayer to compile these reports.

ST PIO Prayer meeting will be held at Listowel Church on Thursday May 21st starting at 7.15 pm with rosary Mass and Benediction. Special Mass will be held in Listowel Church on Tuesday evening June 2nd, a Franciscan Friar who was a companion of St Pio will attend and have his mitten and crucifix to bless all, the Priest will spend a few days in the locality before going home to meet the Pope who will be visiting San Giovanni.
HOLY Cross Pilgrimage in honour of St Pio will be held on Sunday May 31st, bus will travel through Listowel, details from Mary McEnery at 066 713119.
PROCESSION in Honour of Our Lady was held in Knockanure last Sunday. The rain remained tame during the ceremony; even bright sunshine broke out for a few minutes. The rosary was recited at the Grotto and hymns were sung as people walked to the church where a talk on Our Lady was given by Fr. Finucane, Fr Lucid and Fr O Callaghan recited prayers and petitions, the Knockanure and Moyvane Youth choirs assisted by visiting singers sang several songs in praise of Mary, the evening concluded with Benediction. A lot of behind the scenes work went into organising the event.

NEW Moon on May 24th, more rain last weekend sent animals back into housing again at night; some animals did not eat a bite of grass so far this year. Patrick Hanrahan of Kilbaha planted maize under plastic last week. The International space station will cross our sky till May 24th. HEALTH: Cost of health care is rising fast in the U.S. when they started Medicare in 1965 there were six working age people per recipient, at present the ratio is four to one and getting worse. Many of the recipients are said to be living in luxury and depriving the young of medical care.

LUCKY:  Steve Mientus and Capt. Kevin Kennelly two Chicago fire-fighters, fell 20 feet into a smoke-filled basement and eight hours later were back at their station with only a few scratches.

Cecilia wife of   Edward  Stack on  14th January 1768, was indicted for stealing two pair of linen sheets, value 27 s. one china tea-pot, value 5 s. two china bowls, value 3 s. two woollen blankets, value 16 s. and two linen pillow-cases, value 2 s. the property of   Thomas Macquire , in a certain lodging room let by contract. DEATH took place on May 8th `09 of Tom Scannell of Skehenerin, aged 90 years, his wife Nora O Connor predeceased him, he is survived by sons Michael, Patrick, James, Thomas and Francis, daughter Elizabeth Walsh, and Sister Margaret Dillane. Tom Scannell was laid to rest at St Michael�s Churchyard following Requiem Mass at Listowel Church on Monday May 11th `09. Parents of Tom Scannell were Elisabeth McMahon of Gortaglanna and Mick Scannell of Bunagara and his siblings were Jack Scannell and Margaret Dillane.
Death had taken place at Johnston U.S. of Sr. Martina Woulfe of Upper Purt.

AGM of North Kerry Harriers takes place at the Railway Bar in Ballybunion on May 28th at 8pm.

RAIN and more rain is the constant torment to stockmen, some fields are very badly poached, causing distress to both man and beast. A few farmers with well drained reclaimed bog are coping better than most. Last Saturday almost every farmer at the mart in Abbeyfeale was looking at the few bales on display only to find that they were all sold as soon as the arrived.

MARRIAGE took place at the Church of Prince of Peace Fossa of Betty O Carroll of Moyvane South and Ger O Connell of Mountcollins. The ceremony was performed by Fr Liam O Connell. Best man was Thomas Kirwin. Bridesmaid was Kristine O Carroll. The reception was held at the International Hotel in Killarney.
