GREAT Halloween party was held at the New Community Centre in Knockanure, a great effort was put into the event by the organisers.

COOKERY classes will commence in the Community Centre, Knockanure on Tuesday night 6th November at 7.30pm.

COMPUTER Classes begin on Wednesday Nov 7th .

Parent and Toddler Group begins at 10am on Nov 15th and on Friday 23rd Nov, dancing with Johnny Barrett at Knockanure Community Centre.

BEST Wishes to all who presented with their diplomas and degrees recently, the long struggle is over and now the real work must begin. Only one in ninety nine people in the world receive third level education. The IT students were urged by their head in Limerick to take risks, at their recent conferring ceremony.

Members and friends of Moyvane ICA produced 100 pairs of baby booties and 30 quilts which are destined for Chernobyl Children�s Project.





LOCAL Craft worker Mairead O Connor will be spinning wool with her spinning wheel at the Listowel Arms Hotel as part of the Craft Fair and Food Fair on Sunday 11th November, many other exhibitors will be displaying their crafts also.

WEDDINGS: Angela Gould of Kilmorna and Jeremiah Kelly of Knockadireen, Duagh were married at St Bridget�s Church, Duagh on October 26th `07 by Fr Pat Moore P.P. Bridesmaids Rose Costelloe and Liz Gould. Best man was Tim Scanlon and groomsman was Anthony Maher. Kerrie Anne Casey was flower girl. Pageboys were  Eoghan Kelly, Eamon Dowling and Michael Costelloe. Angela is daughter of Nora and Ned Gould and Jeremiah is son of Mary and Eddie Kelly.

Laura Slemon of Listowel and Timothy Larkin of Knockanure were married at the Cathedral in Killarney on October 27th `07 by Fr Declan O Connor who is a native of Duagh. Best man was Chris Larkin; groomsmen were P J Larkin and Noel Larkin. Bridesmaids were Sandra Slemon, Maura Mahony and Mairead Slemon. Flower girl Khyesha Mahony and Pageboy was Rory Mockler. Laura is daughter of Mary and Patrick Slemon and Timothy is son of Maria and the late John Larkin of Carrueragh.

HISTORY: Eamon Kelly joined the Abbey Theatre company in 1967, he came to Listowel in 1944. In 1947 about 4,000 died from TB in this Country. Canon John Hayes born Nov 11th 1887, he started Muintir na Tire in 1937 and died in 1957. Kerry Sentinel of November 2nd 1907, reports that the committee of the National Teachers Congress were at East Avenue Hotel, Killarney, inspecting facilities for their forthcoming Congress which would be held at Easter 1908, the hall could accommodate 1,500 people; also reported is the death of Mortimer Galvin of Clounmacon after a lingering illness, he was guardian under the old and new regime for over 25 years, he was survived by his wife, son, brothers, relations Mr and Mrs David Ruddle, Galvin Family Patch, McEllistrim Family of Ballymacelligott, the Maher, McElligott, Flavin and Foran Families also attended, he was buried in Duagh. The British Foreign secretary proposed a Jewish homeland in Palestine on November 2nd 1917.  Australian transportation sample index for Griffin; Mary Griffin alias Sullivan or Maguire, of Yellow Road Tralee, tried 1829, wanted   her family to join her in Australia; Daniel Griffin aged 16 years tried for larceny in 1850 transported for 7 years; Daniel Griffin age 31 years tried for perjury, sentence 1 month in jail and transported for 7 years; Maurice Griffin age 48 years tried 1848 for sheep stealing, got 10 years transportation; Pat Griffin aged 32 years tried in 1850 for cow stealing, transported for 14 years, discharged 1856; Mary Griffin aged 50, a widow with 7 children from Tralee, was in possession of flesh and pelts of two stolen sheep, document date 1823; Thomas Griffin aged 80, stole sheep to feed his 13 children and grandchildren, imprisoned in Kerry; Michael Griffin tried at Tralee for manslaughter in Tralee 1825, he had a wife and three children.

MOYVANE have won 19 North Kerry Championships the first was in 1925, Craughdarrig won the year Knockanure were left stranded in Knockanure, their lorry failed to arrive to transport them to the match, having cycled and travelled by trap car to Asdee, Knockanure found that they were late.

RESEARCH: It is estimated that from 50 to 100 million animals are used in experiments each year, they range from fruit flies, mice to primates. Test results from humans biological samples taken in developing countries are not sent back to the patients.

FAIR: Athea fair on Saturday last bought crowds from far and near, a great day out with many stands and plenty of ponies and horses, only a few cattle were on display, the festive atmosphere of the day contrasted with the recollections of the older generation who attended the old fair, their long walks, cattle escaping into dykes and fields, exhaustion and at times hunger after the long day herding cattle, the lonely trip home with animals who were not sold, and then the thought of another day, and money scarce till then.





HISTORY: This country experienced bad weather in 1946 and spring of 47, in 1946 civil servants, guards and army helped farmers harvest crops, the wheat acreage 1945-46 was the highest since 1847, the bad winter of `46 and spring of `47 with frost till March prevented planting of crops, the Minister told the Dail in late spring that because of the weather that 2 million acres of ploughing remained to be done to reach the 1946 tillage acreage. A milk shortage in `47 , the government the use of cream except for making butter, the butter ration was reduced, special interest free loans scheme introduced by the government, with payback over 18 months were taken out by 4,000 farmers. Melchert: Former workers at Melchert had a reunion recently, the company operated in Listowel for 28 years and over 800 worked there at one time or another.

DENNY�S in Tralee are to reduce their workforce by another 50, the establishment is there for 60 years and in its prime employed up to 400.

HISTORY: Pope Leo Xll was due to celebrate three important anniversaries in 1893, his 84th birthday, 50th anniversary of his Episcopal consecration and the 15th anniversary of his election as Pope, so Cardinal Michael Logue wrote on November 15th 1892 to Fr Ring OMI at Inchicore in Dublin asking him to organise a pilgrimage to Rome to greet the Holy father in February 1893. The Irish pilgrims group consisted of 3 bishops, 103 priests, 136 women and 100 men, people who were not able to travel formed themselves into associate members numbering 1.500.000 supported by 1.700 priests. The pilgrims were organised in groups, St Patrick, St. Laurence, St Albert, St Jarleth, St Bridget, St Dympna, St Malachy, St Macartin, St Kieran, St Coleman, St Finbar, St Mel, St Brendan St Columba, St Munchin, St Kevin, St Columbanus and St Ita. The future Pope Leo was at the House of Commons when Daniel O Connell was speaking there in 1846. Michael Logue the future Cardinal entered Maynooth 1857 and it took six months to elect Pope Pius Vll in 1799. A Universal Jubilee was proclaimed in 1825 and the future pope LeoXlll was chosen to read the address to the then Pope LeoXll. The bicentennial of Mount St. Mary�s University and Seminary in Emmitsburg, Md. Was celebrated in Nov 2007.

After all that we were told that benefits of eating fish outweigh the risks.

Fr Tighe was ordained for the Dublin Diocese in 1983.

EMIGRATED:  Edmund Dinneen went to America, his father Timothy is buried at Knockanure. Edmond had three sisters.  Bridget Dinneen married Cornelius Mulvihill in 1862 and Catherine Dinneen married Roger Mulvihill in 1857. 

The third sister, Mary, married Patrick Enright of Tarbert in 1860.  A brother, John Dinneen, was living in Glenalappa in 1892, two other brothers, Dan and Michael, emigrated.
