KILLED: On August 4th 2006, 17 AFC aid workers were killed in the town of Muttur, in the North East of Sri Lanka. After three local investigations no conclusions were reached.

AMNESTY International with Gael Force West and ACARA are involved in Ireland's Largest Adventure Races on 23 and 24 August in Westport, Co. Mayo. Amnesty supporters are wanted to join in this year.

SEARCHING on the internet a new Irish search called Cuil may help, they claim to have 120 billion pages in their index.

CUTS will be planned by departments; the principal motive will be to preserve the jobs of pen pushers while cutting back on the people they are supposed to serve. It is time the public were given more information about all the study groups including the weight of school bags, the electronic voting, etc, what about all the regulators who vie with each other to raise their profile.

MOON: New Moon was on Friday August 1st a solar eclipse occurred and on August 16th the full moon will be nearly eclipsed, the second new moon this month will be on the 30th. 2009 is designated by the UN as International Year of Astronomy to mark 400 years ago Galileo first used his telescope to observe the sky. The Space station was visible till last Saturday Aug. 3rd.

Bridesmaids were Johanna Curtin (nee Leahy), Nora and Patricia Leahy sisters of the bride. Best man was Liam O Connor, grooms men were William Madden and John Lynch. Flower girl Rachael O Sullivan and Pageboy was Dylan Quinn. The bride is daughter of Pat Leahy and Mary Quinn and the Groom is son of Chas Curtin and Mary O Connell. The reception was held at the Lanterns and the couple will reside at Coolaclarig.

BEST Wishes to Brendan Broderick of Kilmorna and Lisa Keogh of Newtown Court, Wexford who got married in the Church of the Immaculate Conception Wexford Town on July 12th.the best man was his brother Thomas and groomsmen were his brother Damien and friend Joe Doris. Bridesmaids were Julia Kearney, Fiona Sugrue Shauna Kelliher. Flower girl was Anna Kearney. The reception was held at the Riverbank Hotel Wexford. CONGRATULATIONS to Estuary AC team who came 2nd in the under 16 boys 100m Inter �Club relay finals held in Tullamore recently, runners were Neilus Stackpoole, Tony O Sullivan, Reece Barron, Jamie Kelly and sub Pat Mullane.

DIARY: Fanny Burney wrote on August 2nd 1786 about the attack by a  decently dressed woman  on the King who had just arrived at the garden door of St James�s, she attempted to stab him twice but failed , when the crowd caught the would be assassin he ordered them not to hurt her the poor creature is mad; John Wesley was preaching near Stockton  on August 4th 1759 when a Lieutenant and a press gang from a man of war tried to seize men, the women broke the lieutenants head and drove him and his men away with stones. Queen Victoria recorded on August 12th 1849 as her boat was sailing to Loch Ryan a wave came over the ship and threw everybody down, she intended to create Bertie Earl of Dublin as a compliment to the town and country, he had no Irish titles but was born with several Scotch titles. On August 14th 1651 Elias Ashmole  recorded that she was greatly oppressed in her stomach, Mr Sanders sent her a piece of bryong root to hold in her hand, in a quarter of an hour she was cured, Dr Wharton�s medicine which she had took earlier was ineffective.

CANICE Collins a Presentation Brother who worked in Granada and St Lucia was born in Moyvane in 1914 lost his mother when young , when the Great Fire broke out in a town in St Lucia on June 19th 1948 he was principal of the local school, for his efforts in controlling the fire he received an MBE the following year, he died in 1957 and is buried at the Incarnate Word cemetery Beaumont. Presentation secondary school was opened in Granada 1947 and had 210 pupils.

Christopher Columbus first saw Grenada on August 15th 1498, there is mountain in Grenada 1,749 feet high with lake on top, population of Grenada in 1656 was about 300, in 1950 it had reached 72,000.

DEATH has taken place in Wales of Pat Stack who was born 88 years ago in Moyvane to Paddy Stack and Margaret Flaherty. Pat is survived by his wife Mary Kennelly a native of Knockanure, children Theresa, Austin, Margaret, Jerry and Hellen, siblings Richard and Mary in Moyvane, Nora in Melbourne, Australia, Hannah in Derry, and the following in England, Michael, Tim and Theresa. Pat was predeceased by his brothers John and Jim and sister Bridget. Requiem Mass for Pat Stack will be said on Thursday August 7th `08 at Prestatyn, North Wales Church, Pat went to England about 60 years ago.

MOON: Watch for meteor showers as the peak around now;  August 16th the full moon will be nearly eclipsed as it rises, the second new moon this month will be on the 30th. Flooding recently caused much upset to farmers along rivers, most animals were eventually found safe.
MASS held last week at the local graveyards was well attended, the evenings were fine for Mass in Knockanure and Ahavoher but it was pouring on the evening of Murhur mass, which was transferred to the Church. Fr McMahon and Fr Lucid celebrated the Masses. Moyvane and Knockanure choir participated and thanks are due to all the people who were involved in the masses and preparing for them. All who keep the graveyards tidy and cut the grass are to be congratulated for their work, long may their community spirit continue.
CONGRATULATIONS to Athea school children who performed so well on WL102 on Friday evening last, they are an example to follow.

SAD to hear that Munster Whole Foods are going into receivership, the prices of all their brands were well below the international brand names.
MARRIAGE too place recently of Maria Molyneaux of Clounmacon and Christopher Cowan of Galway at Listowel Church, Canon Linnane officiated. Best Man was Declan Murry, Groomsman John Cowan. Bridesmaids were Martina Molyneaux and Sinead Buckley. The reception was held at Dromhall Hotel Killarney.
WEDDING took place recently in Abbeyfeale Church of Aine Murphy of Killarney Road, Abbeyfeale and Michael Reidy of Upper Athea, the ceremony was performed by Fr Madden P.P. Athea. Bridesmaids were Sadie Reidy, Tracy Mulvihill, Helena Fitzgerald and Niamh O Connor. Best man was Diarmuid O Connor and groomsmen were Mark, Padraig and Timmy Reidy. The bride is daughter of Liam and Joan Murphy and the groom is son of Paudie Reidy and Margaret Woulfe. The reception was held at the Arms Hotel.
MOYVANE born woman Celine Kennelly recently received an award for her dedicated service for undocumented people in the U.S. Celine is daughter of Anna Maria and Timmy Kennelly.
FESTIVALS: Small local festivals could not compete with the extravagance of super events, but for the local community they are a treasure, which cannot be replicated anywhere else. It is sad to see a report in the papers from a manager in Failte Ireland saying its no good advertising to people already in |Kerry, who told the manager so. We all know that great numbers of our friends and relations call to see us and time their holidays at local festival time.

BOOK on the Ahern brothers of Athea is now available locally; 100 years ago they were unbeatable athletes. Tim won an Olympic Gold medal and Dan won eight American Championships over a twelve year period. Over the years of the games Ireland won 8 gold, 6 silver and 6 bronze.  Early Olympic Medals for Ireland; 1900 High Jump 1.78m Pat Leahy, he also got Bronze in the Long Jump of 6.95m also at the same games John Flanigan got Gold in the Hammer at 51.01m; In 1904 John Daly got Silver, John Flanagan Gold Tom Kiely also got Gold; 1908 Con Leahy got silver, Tim Aherne Gold, Denis Horgan Silver and John Flanagan Gold.  Ireland had more successes before we started pouring money into councils.
OLYMPICS: The opening ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Olympics was a very spectacular affair; it will inspire artists for many years to come. A pity so few athletes participated in the ceremony, they were minding themselves for the games, our competitors seemed to be everywhere except staying at the Athletic Village in Beijing. The Olympic Games were revived in 1896, many of the games are remembered because of the achievements of particular competitors, Dr Pat O Callaghan won the Hammer Throw in 1928 and 1932, Dr O Callaghan could jump 6ft 2in weighing 17stone, also in 1932 Bob Tisdale won the 400 metres;  Berlin 1936 Jesse Owens stood out; London 1948 saw Fanny Blankers-Koen of Holland who ran 11 races in 8 days and won four gold medals; for us the Melbourne Games and Ronnie Delaney 1500 meters win was unforgettable.

DEATH took place in California on 28th of July `08 of Bill Fuller who was born near Kilflynn in 1917. Requiem Mass for Bill will be celebrated at noon on Monday August 18th in Lixnaw Church.

KNOCKANURE


VINTAGE Day in Knockanure on Sunday last was a great occasion to meet the neighbours, some came from all over the district even a few from abroad were present. The  beautifully restored cars, tractors and implements, was a credit to all who spent time and money bringing back to life what was abandoned by others.  The weather was great in the afternoon with some in their shirt sleeves, thanks is due to Leo Finucane who provided the site which was ideal considering the wet weather we had over the past weeks. The committee and volunteers who organised the event deserve our praise and thanks. Knockanure Community Centre had a stand and a band player all afternoon.
ST PIO Prayer meeting will be held in Listowel Church on Thursday August 21st , starting at 7.15pm, all are welcome. 
SEANCHAI are looking for items on Listowel Races to display during Heritage Week, details from 068 22212. Seanchai Writing Poetry course runs from 6th to 7th of September, it is directed by Micheal Fanning. Novel and Short Story courses are to follow at end of September and mid October.

Harnett of Abbeyfeale on Danneen Dan Harnett who held up the Mail Coach near Abbeyfeale on August 3rd 1848, around the same time Maurice Sandes of Sallow Glin was snatched from his horse while on his way to vote for Blennerhasset, Sandes was held till the election was over. Danneen Dan escaped to America where he died shortly after.

NAZI: Andre Steiner celebrated his hundredth birthday on August 22nd `08, he was part of a group who rescued Jews from the Nazi, when he was nervous meeting an official he was about to bribe, he cured his nerves by thinking of the official sitting on the toilet naked.

DEATH has taken place of Kathleen Broderick nee Dalton of Knocknagorna, her parents were Paddy Dalton and Margaret Woulfe. Kathleen  was predeceased by her husband Con who died in 1995, she is survived by her children Dan, Michael, Paddy, Neilus, Nance, Mairead, Ita, Cait and Bridget and her sister Mary Dalton. Brothers Willie Joe Dalton and Patrick Dalton predeceased Kathleen Broderick. Following Requiem Mass in Athea Church celebrated by Fr Madden, Fr O Leary and Canon Kelly, Kathleen Broderick was laid to rest at Ahavoher graveyard beside her husband Con and mother-in-law Nora Broderick on August 20th `08.
