| Introduction to Highland Dance has been designed to give interested people the opportunity to experience what Highland Dance is all about. The teacher is a fully-certified Member of the British Association of Teachers of Dance. Classes will be divided by age groups. Minimum age for registration is three years old, Maximum is 99 with a doctors note. |
| Highland Dancing originated as a calisthenic and competitive form at Highland Gatherings and Military displays. The introductory session is only a small taste of what Highland Dance has to offer. The Introductory Session will not prepare you to compete but will introduce the rudiments of Highland Dance. |
| At the Northern Ontario School of Scottish Dance, we offer 3 sessions beginning in September and running until June. Dancers only begin competition once they have full command of four dances (Highland Fling, Sword Dance, Seann Truibhas, and one of the National Dances - Scottish Lilt or the Flora MacDonald's Fancy). Dancers who have yet to compete ARE able to take the exams at the end of each spring, thereby working their way up from Pre-Bronze to Teacher if they so choose. Competition is not compulsory, but medal testing (exams) is encouraged. |
| Dancers who have accomplished the Highland Fling to the Teacher's satisfaction (usually meaning turning the right way and not stopping during the steps) will begin to perform in the community with the Dalriada Scottish Dancers. This enables the group to promote the dance form as well as gain experience as Highland Dancers. |
| You do not require a kilt in your first year, though you will need ghillies (highland dance shoe). You will be given a list of suppliers that we use. |
