In Loving Memory

My beautiful girl
Sheba
August 1988 - July 2001

Sheba was not just a dog, but my truest friend, companion and teacher. She was here before the farm even started but being as awesome as she was, she adapted right into the farm dog image. Rounding up stray cattle, horses and pigs was her specialty and she loved it.

She was never too fond of the horses however and showed her distrust quite clearly. The many times I had been thrown, stepped on, bit, etc. just went to prove her point that they were in her mind, very dangerous animals and that it was up to her to watch over me and that she did. I can't recall a time when she wasn't out back watching quietly from a distance to make sure things were going smoothly. She use to love trail rides too and would accompany me over the fields and through the woods during the summer. I took it for granted that she'd always be there. Either on my rides or awaiting my return.

Sheba

Sheba also loved kittens and during the time she was with us, we had many litters born and she was our Cat Whisperer as my dad put it. Those wild barn cats use to flock to her whenever she entered the barn.

It was hard watching her getting older. It broke my heart to tell her to stay when I set out on trail rides for it was just too hard on her to keep up which clearly upsetted her. After time she understood and didn't bother trying to follow. However, she would always be eagerly awaiting my return.

She went downhill quite quickly in the summer of '01, within weeks actually, which was a bit of a shock. Though quite tired and weak, my girl was determined to come with me to the barn right up until her last days. When she could no longer make it to the barn, she let us know that it was time. The farm will never be the same without her.

Til We Meet Again - My Beautiful Girl

To The Other Side
I Ran And Played
Again, I'm Young
My Master Letting Go At Last
Knowing My Time Had Come.

How Hard It Was To Part
Our Hearts Beating In Time
The Cord Of God, Loosed At Last
Love Flowing, Our Lives Unentwined.

In Doc's Kind Care
A Prayer Is Said
To Guide Me On My Way
While My Friend Stands Nearby
A Witness To This Day.

The Prick Of The Needle
Tho Painful Be, Is Done
My Heart Stops Its Beat,
Ushering Me Here, Where Free
Of Aging Flesh,
Of Graying Eyes -
The Heaviness Of Me.

So Mourn, My Friend, For A Time
But Know I Haven't Gone
Forever From Your Side
And As You Work, You'll
Stop A While
Recalling Times We Shared
And Lips In Smile
And Mind On Me
We'll Join Again In Prayer.

Be Sure My Friend,
When Body Fails
I'll Greet Thou On Your Path
We'll Walk Again, Side by Side,
Our Hearts At Rest, At Last.
