Title: When She Cries

Book: III
Chapter: Three
Chapter Title: Reason For The Rain

Rating: R.
Disclaimer: Aye, captain. I hold no deeds to Gilmore Girls. And I don’t own John Mayer’s This Will All Make Perfect Sense Someday.

Time Frame: Two weeks after the last chapter. Is that important? No. Yet I still say it.
Author’s Note: This fic is still alive. I’m just getting slower at writing it. All the WSC love to Kait, of course. Cause she’s Kait.

She was going to be depressed as hell in the morning, Aurora knew this yet still she sat practically in some guy’s lap she had met eleven minutes before, nursing her Bloody Mary, what number drink this was a little hazy in her head. But hey- so was the guy’s name. So it was the least of her problems at this particular moment. And if she was going to feel down and out come the morrow, it was better to reach a near euphoric state tonight, which had to be better than her normal state of mind any way. So she would take advantage of Mister Greeneyes- his temporary name for now until he thought to offer it again or if it magically reappeared in her brain, and his leer for her purposes tonight. She liked his eyes; she had recently developed a sudden distaste for blue eyes. Not that it had anything to do with the two pairs of blue eyes she had arrived with. Not at all.

Blue eyes number one, better known as Tolly, had gone off in search of a bathroom fifteen minutes before. Now, he had either gotten lost, or just couldn’t find her again. She could only hope it would stay that way. Blue eyes number two, also known as Lola, had run into Spring Delaney- of all people- and they had set off to play darts. Anything and everything was competition between the two girls. And Lola had already won in the guy catching department- after all hadn’t she been seen on the arm of Kenzie Ambrose these past four months in society papers? And as far as Aurora knew, from secondhand sources of course, Lola’s parents hadn’t flipped to a society page since the divorce. Lola had always lucked out like that.

The Parents DuGrey had never object to a person Lola would date, as far as she knew, and unless there was something truly heinous about the guy, Aurora doubted that they would. As long as their daughter was happy. If only her own parents shared the same sentiment. Aurora went back to try and focus on her task. The only thing she hated more than envying Lola DuGrey, was the small amount of comfort provided to her that she knew how truly fucked up her best friend was.

            Wasn’t she just lovely tonight?

Aurora flicked her gaze upward, and widened her brown eyes. “Do you have a room upstairs?”

Mister Greeneyes grinned wolfishly back at her. “I was just about to invite you back up there.”

She finished off her drink before offering her hand. “Let’s go then.” She sought out Lola, met her friend’s eyes and Lola shrugged in return. Whatever. She knew that she was leaving; the responsibility portion of this evening was over. Let the self-destruction begin.

“Ow,” Lola rubbed her upper arm as soon as Tolly released his grip, after dragging her away from the dartboard and across the room. That was really bad of him, too. She had been winning.

He just shot her a look and continued to drag her through the bar, and finally outside. Now, Tolly may be hot, he may be a friend of Aurora’s, but that didn’t mean she liked him. But that was okay, since the feeling was mutual.

“Did you see where Aurora went?” He asked as soon as they had stepped into the outdoors, where it was now lightly misting. It had been a downpour only twenty minutes earlier.

Oh, great. He had led her right into a shallow puddle. There went her satin shoes. “Yes.”

“And you didn’t do any to stop her?”

Lola hated being lectured. “No. She’s a big girl, completely capable of making her own decisions.”

            “Bad ones.”

            She shrugged, “Hers to make.”

“Do ever even remotely care about someone other than yourself?” It was amazing that after two years of knowing her, even if it was in a superficial way, his tone could still sound that incredulous.

“When it matters,” she replied. Really this thing with Aurora picking up guys in bars, or parties or whatever social event had been going on for years.

“And this doesn’t count as mattering?”

“You’re unbelievable.” Tolly had that disgusted tone that Dallie’s voice always held when he was talking to her.

            “Thank you.”

            “It’s not a compliment.”

“You should be more specific then.”

Tolly tugged on the ends of his hair. Oh, now he was really getting frustrated. Lola would pity him had he not been the cause of her shoes being ruined. “Lola.”

“Look,” Lola began, stepping to the side of him. “She’ll be back in an hour, tops. If you want to wait that long…wait. Or go have some fun of your own.”

“Let me guess what your next suggestion is,” he looked over at her. “You showing me what fun is?”

She snorted, “Yeah, I’ve been secretly waiting all these years to seduce you. I can no longer maintain my lust.” Lola rolled her eyes. “Don’t be so full of yourself. Go find someone else. I’m not getting dragged into this.”

“It’s not worth running the risk of contracting a V.D.”

She made an tsking noise with her tongue. “Poor Tolly. Life must be so boring when you play it so safe.”

“It’s actually not,” he countered. “You might want to try it sometime.”

“Maybe later,” Lola started walking backwards, towards the parking lot where her car was. “I’ll see you back at Aura’s apartment.”

Oh yeah, and he couldn’t wait for that. Oh wait, he couldn’t wait for her to leave the state again. That was it.

Drinking was never a good idea. Aurora pressed her forehead down onto the table and pondered that. She said this during every hangover in her life, yet she still continued to drink. Maybe she was just attracted to bad decisions. She should bring it up to her therapist next time she saw her.

Someone set something, possible a mug, by her head. Ouch, that was loud.

“Not funny,” she said. But her arm and the table muffled it, so it probably came out sounding quite incoherent.

Fingers grasped her neck and lifted her up. “Hydrate yourself,” a voice said. It was a manly voice, so it was in all probability, Tolly.

Aurora didn’t attempt to talk, just mumbled and brought the glass of water to her lips. Mmmm. Liquid was a good thing. Who would have ever guessed? “Thanks.” There, that sounded somewhat intelligible.

“I thought you might be the one retching this morning.” That was an awful word, ‘retching’, Aurora should try to get it banned from everyone’s vocabulary. “But,” he gestured to the bathroom. “It appears to be someone else.”

Aurora would have nodded, except she wasn’t stupid. “Lola.” She was smart, especially since there couldn’t have been any one else in the apartment.

He hadn’t actually seen her…never mind, it was none of his concern. “Looks like everyone had a fun night last night.”

She took a sip of her water. “And a horrible morning after.” Her head resumed its original position on the table. There. Now if only she could stay like this forever.

Aurora felt Tolly rubbing her back, oh wow that felt nice. She decided to rephrase her previous thought so that it would include this portion. This was very nice. Too bad she hated it for that exact reason.
