Hello all - sorry I've been away for so long - I hope to have some new "stuff" up soon on the website. For those of you who missed the Matty Shiner Tribute at Duquesne, I'll have some pics and hopefully some audio clips as well. Thanks for stopping by and please check back again soon - thanks - Rick

I know we all feel a great sense of loss with the passing of "Matty" Shiner. But, I also know that none of us will ever forget him and all that we have learned from him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sylvia, her husband, and the Shiner family. I'd like to thank Carl Iezzi and the trombone choir for their very moving and heartfelt contributions to the funeral mass for Matty on Friday, Jan. 17. I'd also like to thank Dave McCollum, Jack Purcell and Sylvia's husband, Robert Bock for their poignant and reflective thoughts about Matty and his incredible life. It's truly amazing how music can take us all back in time to our days with Matty & Eddie in the Trombone Choir or Brass Ensemble. Please take a minute to post your own stories, memories or thoughts on the "personal" tribute page. As the story goes - Matty addressed the Trombone Choir during a rehearsal in 1979 and said something to the effect that when he passes away, he will take over the brass choir in Heaven and when we pass away and get there, we had better be ready for rehearsalbecause there will be rehearsal! (Matt Welch).

Well, enough said for now, here are the pics and sound clips. Click on the names in the table below for the images, and the song titles for the clips. If you encounter any problems opening files, or have any suggestions for the page, don't hesitate to contact me. Thanks! - Rick

As a footnote, Vince Monteleone recently provided me
with the following additional information about the personnel on this album:

I would like to offer a correction regarding the listing of the "early" brass ensemble album cover and notes. Yes indeed, the personnel listed is accurate, except for one number. The Nelhybel, Concert Antiphonale, was NOT performed and/or recorded by the brass ensemble listed on the album cover. That one piece was recorded a year or two BEFORE this album was made. The reason that I know this is, I was in the group that recorded that piece. It was 1968 or 1969. Matty's wife had just passed away. He was off for the week, for grievance leave. For some reason, which I can't recall, we had a deadline to record this piece for someone. We got together that Sunday afternoon, in the 3rd floor rehearsal room. In the absence of Matty, Carl conducted the piece and we recorded it, "for Matty."

"And now you know the rest of the story!"

Thanks Vince!

So, here is the listing of the personnel that Vince could remember. If anyone can fill in the blanks, give me a holler!

These audio clips are from the Eddie Shiner Memorial Concert that was held on May 18, 1997 at the Duquesne University recital hall. Former students of Eddie and Matty performed pieces arranged by Eddie, Jim Drake (former Brass Ensemble member), and others. Conductors were former Brass Ensemble members - Carl Iezzi and Michael Thorsen. Thanks also to Laura Hanlon for her help in organizing the event and recording engineers, Tom Haas and Neal Skacel. Proceeds from the event went to the Eddie Shiner Scholarship Fund. Most of all, thanks to all of the former students of Eddie and Matty for their efforts in making this concert a reality. We only had a couple of rehearsals to pull off some pretty challenging material. Anyway, here are some clips from that memorable evening.
