Dallas County Democrats
In Memory:
Harry Weisbrod

Harry Weisbrod, a longtime Democratic Precinct Chair, party activist, and member of the DCDP Finance Council, passed away September 2, 2001. He had been a leader in this community since at least the 1960's, fighting for justice in many ways. He will be deeply missed as a person, and the Democratic Party has lost a great champion.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 5, 2001, at 2 PM at the Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home, at 7405 W. Northwest Highway, Dallas. This is his obituary from the Sept. 4 Dallas News:

WEISBROD HARRY, founder of a noted wage-labor consultancy firm and an active member of the Democratic Party, died Sunday of kidney cancer and heart disease. He was 81. Mr. Weisbrod began his company in 1967 and until his death was a consultant to numerous business and trade organizations on labor matters. Prior to forming his own company, he worked for the Internal Revenue Service and Department of Labor for over twenty years. While a wage-hour investigator for the Department of Labor, he organized the first union of federal employees in order to gain recognition for the group as a national bargaining unit. He negotiated a union contract with Willard Wirtz, then Secretary of Labor under both Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. He authored several books on labor law and was a certified labor arbitrator. Mr. Weisbrod became a CPA in 1955 and was recently named Dallas CPA of the Year.

Mr. Weisbrod was extremely active in the Democratic Party and was Dallas Precinct Chairman for many years. He attended four National Democratic Conventions including the most recent one. In 1972, he organized supporters for Senator McGovern and was selected as a McGovern delegate to the National Convention.

He was born in New York on March 6, 1920 and was a graduate of City College of New York. He cheated on his eye exam in order to enter the U.S. Army, but was stationed in Paris, Texas instead of Paris, France. He met his wife, Beatrice, in 1946 and moved to Dallas in 1947, becoming an active member of the community. In the 1960s, Harry and Bea Weisbrod helped organize the League for Educational Advancement in Dallas (LEAD), a grassroots organization dedicated to the reform of the Dallas School Board. He also was appointed to serve on a number of boards and commissions in the City of Dallas including the Dallas Civil Service Commission.

Harry Weisbrod graduated Yeshiva High School in New York and was a longtime member of Temple Shearith Israel in Dallas, where he loved attending religious services on a regular basis. His hobbies and passions were politics and public affairs, his family and friends, and horse racing. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Beatrice; his sons and their spouses, Carl and Jamie and Leslie and DJ, all of Dallas; his sister, Hadassah Weisbrod of Jerusalem, Israel; and his grandchildren, Eric, Joshua, Esther, Alexis and Max.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday afternoon, September 5 at Sparkman Hillcrest at a time to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be sent to Hadassah, 10830 N. Central Expressway, Suite 265, Dallas, TX 75231 or to the charity of their choice.
