Robert Smith
Long-time Democratic Precinct Chair Robert Smith died February 7, 2002. This is his obituary from the Dallas Morning News, with wake and funeral information at the end.
SMITH, JR ROBERT, ENNIS, born April 17, 1931 in Gilmer, Texas to the proud parents of Kizzel and Ennis Smith, passed away Thursday morning at St Paul Hospital in Dallas. His parents & sister Trixie Callahan preceded him in death. Robert attended Valley View Schools in Gilmer and later furthered his education at Prairie View A&M College. He joined the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War, where he was awarded the Medal of Bravery.
Robert accepted Christ at an early age and attended Valley View Baptist Church in Gilmer. There he served as president of the Junior Deacons and the Youth Choir. After he moved to Dallas, his very strong faith and love for God led him to join Zion Baptist Church. He later moved to North Park Baptist, and finally resting at Greater St. James Baptist Church. He was a faithful Deacon at each of his church homes.
He was employed by Mutual of Omaha Insurance, as a salesman until retirement in 1997. Retirement didn't last very long. He joined the work force in 1998 as a part-time Courtesy Driver for Steakley Chevrolet and later for Park Cities Ford and Jeep.
Mr. Smith was an outstanding pillar in the community and past and present member of numerous service and political organizations such as: Precinct chair over 35 years, Election judge until death, Member of the Progressive Voters League, Lifetime member of the Oak Cliff Democrats, Lifetime member of the NAACP, Lifetime member of the Black Chamber of Commerce, Dallas County Community Action Center, County and State delegate over 35 times, Member of the Negro Chamber of Commerce, The Moorland Branch YMCA, Member of the Black State Democrat, Chartered member for the Dallas County Coalition of Black Democrats, Member of Concern Voters Council, Member of Black Citizens for Justice, Law and Order.
He leaves to celebrate his loving memory: wife of 18 years Mrs. Dorothy Smith. Two step daughters Denise Tatum and Jo Carroll of Dallas, two grandsons; Joshua Tatum and Justin Carroll of Dallas. Seven sisters; Mozzel Jimmerson, Cetta Cameron, Imojean Trimble, Elene Daniels, Wanda Jones, Dorothy Smith and Willie Jo Callahan. One brother; Albert W. Smith , one uncle; Major McClung and a host of Nieces, Nephews and friends. Extended family Niece, Dianne Fuller, Nephew, Elvis Fuller of Oklahoma City. Special friend James Fantroy.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, February 12, 2002 at 11 am, at Greater St. James Baptist Church. A wake will be held Monday, February 11, 2002 from 7:15 to 8:15 at St. Mary's Chapel on Cedar Crest.
