Veteran Dallas teacher Evia Thompson Mooney died Thursday from liver failure Baylor University Medical Center. She was 67.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Dallas West Church of Christ, 3510 N. Hampton Road. Burial will be at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery.

Mrs. Mooney had a liver transplant a little more than six years ago, said her husband, Fletcher Mooney. She became ill again two years ago and had to quit her teaching job at San Jacinto Elementary in Dallas.

The educator earned a bachelor's degree from Bishop College in Dallas, now Paul Quinn College; a master's in education from Prairie View A&M, near Houston; and a reading specialist certification from Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

Mrs. Mooney was working on a doctorate in education at Texas A&M University-Commerce before she became ill. "I was really happy when the mobile telephone came into existence," Mr. Mooney said. "We could keep track of each other."

Mr. Mooney said his wife's teaching career spanned more than 35 years. During that time, she was a teacher and principal in the Wilmer-Hutchins district and a counselor for Dallas schools.

Mrs. Mooney was also a leader in the Dallas American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Post 802, serving as president from 1999 until recently. She was also a member of Dallas West Church of Christ.

"She was a dedicated person," her husband said. "Over a period of time, she had a lot of students that she helped turn around or helped finish school."

Survivors include two daughters, Beverly J. Johnson and Lela M. Cantley of Dallas; two sons, John W. Johnson and Eric D. Clay, both of Dallas; stepson Marvin Mooney of Dallas; her mother, Evia Thompson of Dallas; three brothers, Clarence Thompson and Kenneth Thompson, both of Dallas, and Renaldo Thompson of Houston; four sisters, Ongie B. Bolton of California, Frankie Barnes of Wills Point, Texas, Fannie Williams of Dallas and Sandra Greer of Houston; and two grandchildren.
