Dallas County Democrats
Gore News Archive
This site is an ARCHIVE of the website used
for the Dallas County Democratic Party from 2000 to May of 2002, and which was built by the then Chair Bill Howell. Though some information
here will be relevant through the 2002 elections, other pages here are of interest for
history or research. For the
latest updated news about the Dallas County Democratic Party, see their own website at

October 29, 2000 update:
The time is now to pull out all the stops in our efforts to elect Al Gore,
Joe Lieberman, and their fellow Democrats. The presidential race is
extremely close. The good news today is that several swing states appear
to
be moving back in our direction. We are also buoyed by several prominent
newspaper endorsements in key areas. Excerpts from some of them are set
out
below.
Volunteers Needed
For those of you who can volunteer from now through Election Day, Nov. 7th,
and who have not been plugged into a project, please send an e-mail to me at [email protected].
If you can phone, walk or drive voters to the polls in Dallas County--and
you don't yet have an assignment--let us know and tell us what you can do.
Your help is needed. For the lawyers on the list, if you currently have no
assignments for Election Day, please let me know if you are available for
the Dallas County legal team and I will give you the details.
Early Voting
In-person early voting continues through Friday, Nov. 3. Again, we urge
you
to vote early and encourage your fellow Gore-Lieberman supporters to do
the
same. To find the times and locations of early
voting
in your county for the Nov. 7 election, click on the following:

October 25, 2000 update:
This morning I spoke at length with long-time Gore
supporter and noted Dallas attorney Fred Baron who had just returned from a
series of meetings and visits in Nashville. After conferring with many of
the Gore-Lieberman campaign higher-ups and the vice president, Fred's
report
is very encouraging, and we have seen this reflected in the polls in the
last 48 hours. I pointed out the CNN/USA Today/Gallup Poll last evening.
Since then, Reuters (Zogby) has released a poll showing us with a
three-point lead. See this. The Pew
Research Center shows the race dead even. See
this. There is no question, however, that the
"Nader factor" is playing into the Republicans' hands, particularly in
Michigan, Washington, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Oregon.
Take Action: What can be done? Once again, we prevail upon you to take a
moment to write a letter to one or two newspapers in those states listed
above, showing your support for Gore and telling the truth about Bush,
particularly on issues of the environment and choice. And again, the link
to the newspaper directory is found at this.
Here
are some links you can follow to get a better picture of the situation:
Gore Visit Highlights Struggle with the Nader Factor
Gloria Steinem Warns Oregonians Against Nader Vote
Nader Is Poised to Play Spoiler
Nader's Groovy Night Out
It's Turn-out: This election is coming down to voter turn-out--even more so
than usual. And that means Democratic turn-out! The more registered
voters
who turn out to vote nationwide, the more likely is victory. To see the
math, look at this. Maximizing
voter
turn-out in Democratic areas is the key, not only for Gore-Lieberman, but
for all Democrats on the ticket.
Good Reading: To help you convince those undecideds and to "up" our
turn-out, take a look at the following. These links will also help you in
your letter writing effort. Pass them along.
Molly Ivins: Surely this has to be a bad Bush dream
Michael Kinsley: The Emperor's New Brain
Robert Scheer: Beware of Bush; He's Not What He Seems
David Nyhan: 'What's not to like' you say?
A Sad Note: Dallas County Democratic Precinct Chair J.P. Joyce of the Oak
Lawn area died last evening. J.P. was a Democratic stalwart for many
years,
and he had been heavily involved in the Gore-Lieberman campaign and the
campaigns of other fine Democrats. Say a prayer for him. We will truly
miss J.P.
Volunteers: Please let us hear from those of you who are available for
driving voters to the polls, walking and phoning between now and election
day and on election day.
Thanks, Etc.: Once again, thanks to the many of you who have just not
stopped in this effort. A particular thanks to Dallas County Chairman Bill
Howell who regularly transmits these updates and posts them on the Party's
web site. See this. Equal thanks to Rockwall
Chairman John Duke and Web Master Becky Brock who get the message out to
the
Rockwall folks and to others, as well. And,of course, to all of you who
transmit this information to your own lists, including the Stonewall
Democrats, you have our gratitude. Through the efforts of all of you, we
will win this race. Thanks also to my other co-chairs, and particularly
Theresa Daniel, the State Democratic Executive Committeewoman from Texas'
16th Senatorial District.
We are currently out of yard signs, but we have hopes of obtaining more
(though not many). If so, they will be placed at the Dallas County
Democratic Party Office. Be sure and call before you head over. There are
still some bumper stickers and buttons available.
For those of you who have asked about the Victory Party for Dallas County
and the surrounding area, it's in the works. State Committeewoman Lisa
Payne is undertaking this project even as I write. We'll let you know more
when things are firmed up.
Finally, there is a group of civil rights and employee advocates and
attorneys who are signing onto a petition in support of Al Gore and Joe
Lieberman. Once completed, the petition and a news release will be
distributed to the media. This petition discusses Bush's Texas record on
issues of civil and employee rights. If you fit this description (e.g. a
lawyer who does civil rights work, an advocate for the NAACP, AARP, etc.)
and wish to have your name included, please contact Bill Isbell
.
Don't forget to vote early!
October 24, 2000 update:
There are but two weeks left in what appears to be the closest presidential
election in four decades. All polls now show insignificant differences
between the candidates. For example, the Gallup/CNN/USA Today Poll, which
showed an 11- point lead for Bush two days ago shows a one-point Gore lead
as of a few minutes ago. See
this.
What we do now can and will make a difference.
Many of you have taken the opportunity to write letters to the editor, and
a
number of your letters have been published. Notably, some members of this
list, including Sharon Barbosa and Janette Johnson (and perhaps someone
else
I have missed), had letters published in the Dallas Morning News' print and
cyber editions today. See
this and
this. I
also know that another of Janette's letters will soon appear in a paper in
Pennsylvania, which is extremely helpful. Good work! Please keep writing
those letters to Missouri, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Washington, Florida,
Wisconsin, Michigan, Arkansas, Iowa, West Virginia and Illinois. To find a
paper, go to this and write your heart out. You,
a Texan, can fully and most credibly transmit the truth about George Bush
to
the voters outside this state. For some good information, see
this and
this. For a timely story about the truth in Texas
education, see
this.
And what about those so-called Democrats from Texas who are on the
so-called
"Truth Squad" for Bush. Read about two of them--Hugo Berlanga and Sandy
Kress--here
and
here. Do
you
get some idea what a Bush administration would be like?
I voted early today, and many of you have written to say you have voted
early, too. Mark Coomes of Denton County wrote shortly after the early
voting polls opened yesterday to say that he had voted. Please take
yourselves and as many of your fellow Gore-Lieberman supporters as possible
to the polls during the early voting period. For the times and locations
in
Dallas County, click on this. For
Tarrant County, click on
this.
In the coming days, the Texans for Gore-Lieberman Committee will be asking
you to volunteer in various ways to help turn out our vote. Much of this
will consist of giving your time to other Democratic candidates in programs
that will maximize our vote. In the meantime, keep doing what you're
doing--writing, e-mailing, calling, walking--and a little bit more. Thanks
to all of you.
On to victory,
Ken Molberg
October 22, 2000 update:
Dear Gore-Lieberman Supporters:
I just wanted to let you know that I and several others on the list had the
opportunity to visit briefly with Vice President Gore this morning while he
was in Dallas for the dedication of Rev. T.D. Jake's famous Potter's House
on West Kiest Boulevard. The vice president wanted me to use this list
today to express his sincere appreciation to those of you who have labored
so hard on his and Joe Lieberman's behalf--recognizing that Texas is a
difficult electoral venue. He knows this race is close, and he wanted me
to
urge each one of you to do whatever you can to help him and the other
Democrats on the ballot. He is dedicated to victory on Nov. 7. We
specifically spoke of the misrepresentations made by the Republican
candidate relating to child health care, a patient's bill of rights, and
hate crimes legislation in Texas. I told him he would be proud if he could
have seen some of the things we've accomplished in Bush and Cheney's
"hometown." He was pleased by this, of course. The vice president looked
rested and ready to carry the battle to the Republicans in the closing days
of the campaign.
Along those lines, remember that early voting starts tomorrow, October 23.
I have previously sent information about polling locations. If you need me
to resend it, let me know. Please go vote and take some supporters with
you!
Today and within the last couple of days, we received some major newspaper
endorsements, including those of the
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
, the
Akron Beacon Journal
, the Eugene (Ore.)
Register Guard
, the
Washington Post, the Detroit Free Press
, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn. Star Tribune, and others.
Tom Blackwell forwarded me the following link. I would ask you all to
click
on that link and read Charlton Heston's words a few days ago. You can
judge
a candidate by the company he keeps, like Heston, Bob Jones, Reyn Archer,
Tom DeLay, Trent Lott, Jesse Helms, Strom Thurmond, Newt Gingrich, etc.
Finally, and along those lines, you should see some of the harassing
e-mails
I get as the moderator of this list. Evidently, some of our messages are
forwarded to a few nutcases who have nothing better to do than to sit
around
trying to harass people. One guy regularly spams half of the U.S. Senate
when he responds to me. I kind of enjoy it. It lets me know what kind of
people Gov. Bush attracts.
Thanks to all of you, and on to victory. Vote Tomorrow.
Ken Molberg
October 21, 2000 update:
Thanks! With your help today in Dallas County we stuffed, sealed, stamped
and mailed more than 27,000 individualized pieces of mail to targeted
voters
in the county, supporting Gore-Lieberman and many other fine Democrats!
Without the firm commitment of the many of you who volunteered, we could
not
have completed this task in such a short time.
A big "thanks" also goes to Shannon Bailey, Theresa Daniel, Janice Mattox,
Gary Fitzsimmons, and a handful of other valiant workers who spearheaded
this successful effort. And "thanks" to Chairman Bill Howell and the
Democratic Party Office for their support.
A couple of more items of information:
Candidate Debate: The Dallas Northeast Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a
Candidates Forum on Monday, October 23, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Lake
Highlands United Methodist Church, 9015 Plano Road at McCree. Here is the
Mapquest site to obtain driving directions. Present will be our candidates Regina Montoya Coggins, David Cain and
Harryette Ehrhardt, and their Republican opponents. For those of you who
can, please show up and support our candidates!
Letter Writing: Keep that letter writing campaign going to swing states.
Let me suggest Wisconsin, Florida, Michigan, Iowa, Arkansas, Oregon and
Washington. Today, John Ticnor told me he had been successful in getting
published in one of the major Florida papers. To find the major papers in
the states, go to this site. For some good resource
information for your letters, see this. We Texans
can best tell the rest of the country about George Bush. Tomorrow, the
Dallas Morning News will endorse George Bush. See
this. Of course,
this comes as no surprise. I would, however, urge some of you to pen a
letter to the editor telling the paper what you think. Go to
DMN Letters.
Early Voting--In Person and by Mail: Early voting in person begins Monday,
October 23, and goes through Friday November 3. Check with your county
election officials for times and locations of early voting. For those in
Dallas, go to the Dallas County Democratic Party web site. Please vote early so you can be available on
election day for other projects.
The voting-by-mail process is also underway for those who qualify. If you
need assistance in any regard (such as obtaining a mail ballot because of
age, disability or expected absence from the county), contact your local
voting officials. You may find the name and number of your local elections
person here.
An application for a mail ballot has now either been removed or made
essentially inaccessible on the Secretary of State's Web Site. Thus, I
recommend going to the Dallas County site
if you wish to print off the
form and send it in to your county's voting authority. Remember, the mail
ballot application must be received by October 31--but don't wait that
long.
Return the completed form to the elections administrator of your voting
county, as indicated in the previous links. As an alternative (or if you
are not able to print the form), you may request that the secretary of
state
send you a mail ballot application by clicking on this link.
Etc.: For a good newspaper column about our governor, go to
this. For some good reading and a great link to pass onto your friends
who may be undecided, see this.
Quote for the day: "Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere
ignorance and conscientious stupidity." --Martin Luther King Jr.

October 20, 2000 update:
Don't forget the massive Get-Out-the-Vote mailing tomorrow, Saturday,
October 21, 2000, at the CWA Hall, 1408 N. Washington (at Bryan) in Dallas.
This is a hugely important undertaking. This project will begin at 9 a.m.
Please come help fold, stuff, seal and stamp. We can't get this done
without you. If you need driving directions, please click on
this.
The Zogby Poll today shows the race dead even, while other polls show us a few
points
behind. See this one. What
we do now can help determine the outcome.
For those of you with undecided friends--particularly in battleground
states--I suggest that you send Molly Ivins' most recent column to them.
That Bush lied to the American people during the last debate is
indisputable.
See you tomorrow!
Ken Molberg
October 16, 2000 update:
Please try to attend the final Debate Watch Party of the campaign tomorrow,
October 17, 2000, at the Flying Saucer, 1520 Lower Greenville Avenue in
Dallas, beginning at 7:15 p.m.. We'll have some yard signs, bumper
stickers
and buttons--as long as they last. Snacks and a cash bar. Bring a friend.
Come show that there are plenty of Gore-Lieberman supporters in Texas. We not
only have the best-qualified ticket, we happen to know the opposition well.
For some good reading and a great link to pass onto your friends who may be
undecided, see www.georgebush2000.com.
See you there!
Ken Molberg
October 15, 2000 update:
DON'T FORGET!!!
For those of you in the Dallas area, don't forget the Debate Watch Party
on
Tuesday, October 17, 2000, at 7:15 p.m. at the Flying Saucer Draught
Emporium, 1520 (Lower) Greenville Avenue in Dallas, one block south of
Ross.
We want to have a great showing for the third and final debate between
Vice
President Al Gore and the other fella. Snacks will be furnished, thanks
to
our steadfast supporters at the Saucer. It's a cash bar. For a map,
call
the Dallas Gore-Lieberman line at 214-821-4773.
Yes, for those many of
you
who have asked: WE WILL HAVE YARD SIGNS. We completed several hundred
October 15th. A big, big "thanks" to those who helped, including the
young
and enthusiastic Grant Frankfurt.
Local-area candidates: You are welcome and encouraged to attend. Our
last
debate watch was a real blowout, so come and be introduced and let these
fine Gore-Lieberman supporters know who you are.
RSVP's are not necessary for this event, but it would help for those of
you
who know you are coming to send me a return e-mail. Also, if you can
help
volunteer to set up and staff the entry tables, let me know. I will
forward
your e-mail to Theresa Daniel, one of my fellow co-chairs of the
campaign,
who helped make the first debate watch a tremendous success.
For those of you with lists, please transmit this information. Thanks.
OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Volunteers: If you can volunteer on the Gore-Lieberman phone line for
an
hour or two during the week, please let me know. We have some spaces
available. Thanks so much to those of you who have been helping out.
As
you know, this is a volunteer effort, and you're real troopers.
Letter Writers: Keep writing your letters. Let me suggest Wisconsin,
Florida, Missouri, Iowa, Arkansas, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania,
New
Mexico, Oregon and Washington. To find the major papers there, go here. For some good resource information for
your
letters, see this
.
The Campaign: There is no doubt that this race is close. See
this and
this. We can make a
difference. The way we do it is by sending the message to voters in
swing
states--telling them what the real George Bush is about. The second way
is
to enhance the Democratic turnout for our local candidates, through
phoning,
walking and mailing. The more Democrats we can turn out, the higher our
numbers will be for all of our candidates, including Al Gore and Joe
Lieberman. Please help those local candidates turn out the vote. Call
your
local Democratic Party Office and you will be provided with the
appropriate
information. Also, stay tuned here for important information coming in
the
next several days about a major mailing we will be doing out of Dallas
to
"up" our turnout.
Voting: Once again, don't forget that in-person early voting starts
Monday,
October 23. Also, the voting-by-mail process is already taking place.
If you need assistance in any regard (such as obtaining a mail ballot
because of age, disability or expected absence from the county), contact
your local voting officials. You may find the name and number of your
local
elections person here. (Note
that
these are new links from those previously provided to you. Why the
Bush's
Secretary of State changed them right before the election is anyone's
guess.)
An application for a mail ballot has now either been removed or made
essentially inaccessible on the Secretary of State's Web Site. This is
not
surprising, given that Republicans fear that the elderly and disabled
might
actually vote by mail. Thus, I recommend going to the Dallas County Elections Department
site if you wish to print off
the
form and send it in to your county's voting authority. Remember, the
mail
ballot application must be received by October 31--but don't wait that
long.
Return the completed form to the elections administrator of your voting
county, as indicated in the previous links. As an alternative (or if
you
are not able to print the form), you may request that the secretary of
state
send you a mail ballot application by clicking here.
Early voting in person begins Monday, October 23, and goes through
Friday
November 3. Check with your county election officials for times and
locations of early voting. For those in Dallas, go to this Dallas County
Democratic Party web site page. Please vote
early so you can be available on election day for other projects.
We hope to see you on Tuesday at the Debate Watch!
