Mildred Garland

GARLAND, MRS. MILDRED F. was born September 12, 1925 in Dallas,
Texas to the parentage of Harry Foreman and Millie Bell Foreman. Mrs.
Garland spent most of her life in Dallas. She received Christ at an early
age and joined the Saint Peter Cathedral where she remained a faithful
member until her death. She attended school in Dallas, graduate from
Lincoln High School at the age of fifteen. At the age of sixteen, she
graduated from the school of Madam C. J. Walker as a cosmetologist.
She was a dreamer and she always wanted to go into business for
herself. In the early sixties, Mrs. Garland and her sister, Mrs. Allene
Hardy founded the Allen Street Community Center that served as a model
for the Federal Government Community Action (War on Poverty)
Program. Mrs. Garland served extensive terms on the City of Dallas
Community Development Boards. She also served on the Dallas Legal
Services, Dallas County Community Action Center, the National Clients
Council in Washington DC. She assisted in the development and
coordination of the Dallas Summer Food Program.
Mrs. Garland was a
long time political activist and a precient Democratic Chair. Mrs. Garland
was the founder of the South Dallas Educational Center which provided
Senior Citizens with Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and assisted
them in the payment of their utility services just to name a few. Mrs.
Garland was also co-owner of Cimota Beauty Shop.
Mrs. Garland is
survived by her son, Michael Garland by a former marriage to the late
William "Red" Garland; one sister, Lois B Foreman; two brothers, Alfred
D. Foreman and B. C. Foreman; six grandchildren, Regina Hester, Torri
West, Michael Garland Jr., William Garland, Jason Garland, and Anthony
Small-Garland; four great grandchildren, Tekeia West, Kayla West,
Kameron Hester, Tiffany West, and Torren West; one niece, Tina
Foreman; five nephews, Harry A Foreman, Crestwell Hardy, Donald
Foreman, Burleigh C Foreman, and Rickey Foreman; a host of the family
and friends.
Graveside Service Friday, January 5, 2001, 3:00 P.M.,
Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Dallas, Texas. Visitation 10-9 on Thurs. at
the funeral home. Father R. Garcia officiating. Lomax
