Texas Democrats: Texas Values, Real
Solutions
CLEAR CHOICES and IMPORTANT DIFFERENCES:
DEMOCRATIC PRIORITIES and the STRAIGHT
DEMOCRATIC TICKET
In races for Courthouses, the TX
Legislature, Congress, and the White House,
Democratic wins will mean mainstream, common
sense solutions for all Texans - not just
the few, special interests favored by GOP
plans. A vote for the Democratic ticket is a
vote for these Democratic priorities:
Affordable RX through Medicare for ALL
Seniors: Skyrocketing prescription prices
force too many Texas seniors to choose
between buying groceries and buying
medicine. Texas Democrats will provide all
seniors with affordable, voluntary Medicare
prescription coverage.
To protect drug company profits, the GOP
Congress passed a sham bill that would
subsidize HMOs and insurance companies and
leave seniors to fend for themselves.
Strengthening Social Security: Texas
Democrats will strengthen Social Security by
paying down the debt and protecting the
Social Security Trust Fund.
A plan like the Bush-GOP Social
Security-tax plan - draining $1 trillion
from the Social Security Trust Fund for
privatization and giving trillion-dollar tax
breaks to the wealthiest few - would cut
benefits by up to 50% and weaken Social
Security over the long-term, according to
respected, non-partisan experts at The
Century Foundation.

Real Solutions for Education: To increase
accountability and discipline, Democrats
will reduce class sizes by hiring 100,000
qualified new teachers. Last year, Texas
Democrats gave teachers a $3,000 pay raise
and expanded kindergarten, pre-K, and other
early education programs.
Voucher Raid Remains GOP Priority: Last
year, Texas Democrats stopped the GOP
voucher plan - which raids public schools
that serve all Texas children in order to
subsidize private schools for the few who
live near them and can already afford them -
but Republicans promise to continue to make
it a top education priority.
Raising the Minimum Wage: Democrats will
give 12 million Americans - and 1 million
Texans - a raise by increasing the minimum
wage.
The TX GOP Platform would abolish the
minimum wage. After holding the minimum wage
hostage to budget-busting tax breaks for the
few, Republicans voted last week to repeal
the minimum wage for the rest of this year.

Passing a Tough Anti-Hate Crimes Law: After
James Byrd Jr. was dragged to death, Texas
Democrats passed a tough Hate Crimes bill
through the Texas House. But Republicans in
the Texas Senate killed the bill.
Despite the Byrd family's personal
request, Gov. Bush refused to stop
Republicans from killing the bill. (Austin
American-Statesman, 5/18/99)
