Q102 - KTXQ

Last update 7-12-06
Q102 (KTXQ) was born at the end of summer in 1978. It would become the longest running rock station of Dallas/Ft.Worth. 1996 was the last time Q102 would show up in the top ten. Q102's ratings were going down. In order to boost its ratings in 1994, Q102 switched formats....in a way. Not only did they play album rock, they played active rock too now. Did that help? No, not really. What contributed to the killing of Q102? "Classic Rock" 92.5 KZPS and "All Rock and Roll Oldies" Arrow 97.9 (KRRW). Arrow 97.9 came on on October 15th of 1993. Before that, Q102 was seen in the top ten quit often. Q102 and Arrow 97.9 were sister stations for over 4 years. Before Q102 transformed to active rock in 1994, Arrow and Q102's formats were almost identical, Arrow 97.9 took half of Q102's audience for that year....which helped kill Q102's ratings. When Arrow hit the airwaves Q102 was vanished from the top 10. It only appeared one more time with a 4 share in 1996. Arrow 97.9 got canned in April of '97 after it had already done the damage. The Eagle, The Edge, and The Zone didn't make anything better for Q102. All 4 stations played modern rock in one form or another. DFW’s longest running rock station of over 25 years signed off in August of '98.
