Ewan Evgeni Antilles Dallapè

As most of you know, our main news this month is the birth of our newest family member, our little boy Ewan. He came two weeks before his expected date, on August 19, 2000, at 6:31 in the evening. He weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces, and had tons of black hair. It was a very easy birth, quick and with very little pain. Rio was there to watch his brother come into the family, and he was exceptionally well-behaved and very happy about the experience.
Ewan is a lively baby—making sure we know when he needs to be fed or changed. His long black hair is starting to fall out, and he is getting some fuzzy new hair—also dark. His eyes are still blue, but they are a very dull, dark blue, so we think he might have brown eyes some day. He is adjusting nicely to being in our family—sleeps well at night, smiles occasionally, eats well and is gaining weight rapidly. Like Rio, he is a very fat baby. We don’t know how much he weighs at this point, but we estimate 13 to 13 ½ pounds at the age of seven weeks.
     Welcome, Ewan!
These two pictures show Ewan on the day he was born and Mum with Ewan at one month old.

More About Ewan

About Rio…Rio turned four years old on September 22. He is thrilled to have a new brother—he always wants to hold Ewan, and is able to get him to smile more often than anyone else is. He was happy to be the very first person to hold Ewan after his birth, and he has written a story about it, which you can see on the next page.
In addition to gaining a brother, Rio (and all of us) have had some more adventures. We went to a friend’s wedding a few weeks ago, where Rio was wonderfully behaved and enjoyed himself dancing and eating. We went to an Arts Festival downtown, where Rio made a hat, dug for toy dinosaurs in a sand box, and saw a performance by the Utah Symphony. Rio went to a Big Brother class a week after acquiring that title, and had a ball.
School-wise, Rio continues to get better at reading and writing—he loves to write letters and notes, often initiating the tasks himself. He can now identify all the teen numbers, as well as the twenties and some of the thirties. We recently came upon the Utah Home Schooling Guidelines, which we will use to shape his curriculum. Happily, he is currently functioning at about a 1st grade level, so we are pleased to be in charge of his education. Since he loved his Big Brother class so much, we are thinking of enrolling him in a children’s class or two through the community college—Rio’s top choices are art and cooking!

Ewan When He Got Born
By Rio

Mummy really wanted to have the baby. The amniotic sack was getting bigger. Mum was having contractions. It means the baby is going lower. We got out of bed and then got ready.
I went shopping with Dad, and he bought a Toy Story 2 sticker book and food and juice, because if we were hungry or thirsty, we could get some. The snacks were for eating, and the juice for drinking. The Toy Story 2 book was for if I got bored. Then we finally went to the hospital.
Mum went to the hospital. She pushed really hard, and the baby slipped right out, and she nursed the baby. She got the breast out and she nursed the baby with it. I watched the baby being born. I found it exciting. The lady wrapped it up. I smiled. Dad and I cut the cord. They gave him to me. First I held him, then Dad held him.

THE END

Name the Baby Contest

We had a modest response to our contest. Entrants seemed to have fun with it. Unfortunately, there were no winners (which is a good thing because there was technically no prize!), but that’s not to say some of the names didn’t pique our interest.
Here, from the lists below, are some winners, loser, and jokers.
