No News is Good News…
There hasn’t been very much going on around here lately. The weather has been too hot to do anything (we have had temperatures above 100, which is rather rare for this area), so we mainly just stay inside in the air-conditioning! We did take an evening outing to go to a performance by the Utah Symphony and the Utah Opera, but the heat (even in the evening) made it a little uncomfortable.
Counting Down the Days...
Less than a month to go before the grand event. We are getting really impatient at this point. We took a tour of the hospital, bought and made diapers, fixed up the changing area, and planned what to bring. Now we have nothing left to do but wait! We still, believe it or not, are in doubt as to a name, so those of you who haven’t sent in your Name the Baby Contest entries yet, do so as quickly as possible!
Web Sites…
We both have been active developing web sites lately. Suzanne’s is about herself and her family, and contains pages about her art, theatre experiences, Rio, the new baby, and a biography. She will add more pages on different subjects later. Jerry’s is about Star Wars. And then we have a web site all about Dallapè Dirt, where you can go to read the latest issue, and the older ones that you might have missed. These sites are changing rapidly, so if you want to be updated on all changes, please e-mail us at our new e-address, shown below.

About Rio…
Rio is turning into quite a little artist lately. He loves to draw and color, and will happily spend an hour or two with his coloring books, paper, and markers or pencils. Whereas he used to stick with "guys" and the occasional animal, he now draws everything from cars to landscapes to zoos—complete with squid in the pond! Since we don’t have any recent pictures of Rio, we are putting a couple of his recent drawings in this issue. In fact, he recently entered a drawing contest at Barnes & Noble Bookstore, and won a book. (See these drawings on the back page.) He also loves to have school every day. He now insists on spelling everything he writes with no help, which is great for his independence, but not so great in terms of the fact that he doesn’t know a whole lot of sounds at this point, so everything he writes is hilariously misspelled! One of his recent sentences, "Live in a house," was spelled "LIV IN U HAOOS." We don’t try to correct him at this point—we have found that every time he learns a new sound combination, he starts to use it in his writing without our telling him to, so we know he’ll learn to spell eventually. For now, we are thrilled at his initiative. He also knows pretty much everything there is to know about having babies. Every time we go to midwife’s appointments, Rio finds the baby’s heartbeat with the Doppler stethoscope, and each time, he is thrilled. He says he wants to be a doctor when he grows up. He is really looking forward to being a brother, and he talks to the baby daily.

Name the Baby Contest
We have gotten a few entries for our contest, but we still would like more, so if you haven’t sent your entries in yet, now is the time to do it. You can write, call, or e-mail. The entries we have gotten so far range from interesting to hysterical, so let your imagination run wild! Just send in a list of five names. If we choose one, you will win a FABULOUS PRIZE! All entries will be listed in a future issue. Come on, join the fun!

Rio’s Art

This was Rio’s entry for a drawing contest entitled "Tribute to My Dad." Kids were supposed to write or draw what their dads meant to them. Rio drew this picture and added the caption, "There is a thorn in the yard. Daddy takes the thorn away, so my feet don’t get hurt. That’s why I love him." He was one of four runners-up out of several hundred entries, and he won the book The Dance by Richard Paul Evans.

Here is a drawing of Keith Lockhart.

Here is "Pond with Fish and Squid."
