| May 2, 2008 - Ominous skies, storm on the way. Spotted dog tangled in trees looking anxious. Looks like Mrs. might be feeding. Pup still can't reach box. We get rain and wind. Pup is wet, muddy, and miserable. May 3, 2008 - Raining hard. Spotted pup still out in it. I take a picture of the brown pup in front yard, sleeping on the ground near a dog house that he can't seem to reach. Later, I see Mrs. feeding and dogs eating food on muddy ground. May 4, 2008 - Pups still without shelter. Spotted pup lying by sapling gnawing on his tether, which is about 10" long. Also gnawing on himself. Must be full of fleas. Later he has enough cable to get on the front of dog house roof, but not enough to get inside. May 5, 2008 - Spotted dog in my yard. May 10, 2008 - Black and tan dog in my yard. May 15, 2008 - Spotted dog in my yard. May 25, 2008 - Morning. Spotted pup snubbed up to tree again. Looking pretty miserable. Probably there all night. Evening. Still there. Lying in the mud, chain pulled up tight again. Evening sun glints on the chain. He doesn't move. Not even scratching. I'm afraid he's dead this time. Relieved later to learn he's still among the living, except that he'd be better off if he wasn't. Dog in Yorkie pen is making loud scratching noises. Scratching on wood? Still at it at after nine PM. May 26, 2008 - Spotted dog in my yard. May 27, 2008 - Light brown pup running loose. Comes over to front dog yard. June 2008 - "Pens" constructed in front yard, over on the east side. June 17, 2008 - Black and tan dog in back yard pooping in flower bed and again on fence. Next, he's in the front yard, poops again, must have the runs, no surprise there. Barks at me and postulates. This is morning, before downstairs dogs are out. Then I encounter him coming up the driveway on his way to get some cat food. He doesn't see me until he's almost in the garage. I get three pictures of him today. June 22, 2008 - Light brown dog standing on top of pen, at the corner. Has tether with chain tight on neck. Tries to bark - no sound. Looks pregnant or wormy. Puppies from spring litter are in the pen. He can't make up his mind which way to go - into next pen, into puppy pen, or over the back. He faces Chloe's pen, then turns and faces back side, loses balance and topples out. Looks like he made it to the ground okay. He'll be there for hours if the family gets home as late as usual. June 23, 2008 - Same dog observed in same location as yesterday. June 29, 2008 - Storm, lots of rain. Chloe has got out of her pen and wants back in. Scared of thunder and lightning, and getting drenched. Try to contact owner, no answer. Light brown pup in rain, also. Seems to be tied outside the last pen with no box. Rain stops. I see the Mr. in the yard, and daughter and husband leaving. No one is paying any attention to the dogs. Plastic that was strung over the pens is full of rainwater and hanging down into the puppy pen. There is a small plastic crate in the pen, tilted to one side. I see part of a brown dog acting like it's hanging, it's front leg making slow arcs as though trying to get free but getting weak. I'm shaky, thinking I'm seeing a dog die. Then it gets down on all fours. What a relief! Yikes! There's two light brown dogs. The one I thought was tied outside the pens, is actually in one, and is standing on hind feet, Everytime I look, it's still there. It's not barking, but can't seem to get down. Then it tries, but hangs in collar, front legs swinging around until it gets them back on fence. These people have been home for an hour and the dogs are still in the rain. Mrs. finally goes out, still in church clothes. Looks inside pens and then tries to get Chloe in. I can see a blue collar, but the cable is hooked onto to a choker chain! After finally getting Chloe in the back side of pen, she empties water from plastic. While she's doing this, Chloe goes back out the front because the Mrs. forgot to fasten the fence back up. It's raining again. Mrs. gives Chloe a look and goes back into the trailer. Light brown dog still caught on the fence at two PM. More thunder and rain. 3:30, and pup is still on hind feet and getting pretty tired; Chloe still in the rain. I finally call the sheriff's department. In a matter of minutes, the Mrs. is out there looking. She figures out which dog is in trouble, but can't get him down. Mr. comes out to help, but no good. Mrs. unhooks fence and goes in, and they get him down at last. I go away for an hour or so, and when I get back, Chloe's box is outside the pen. Another storm hits, and she gets inside. No sign of the brown pup. Nervewracking day! July 16, 2008 - Spotted dog in my yard. July 18, 2008 - Im going to work and here comes the spotted dog up the road. I tell him to go home, and he turns around. July 19 & 20, 2008 - Big commotion. Neighbors probably not home, as usual. White puppy loose; no sign of the spotted pup. He and my Twinkle were both barking at something a week or so ago. I wonder where he is now. July 21, 2008 - Get call from Steve Cox, new dog warden. I had met up with Jon Mosier at the vet's recently, and spoke of the problems next door. He said he'd tell the warden, and he did. Warden asked what my concerns were. I had no time, but raced through as fast as I could before leaving for work. He said he'd drive by. He gives me phone number. Going past the neighbor's, I see the red dog standing at the end of a twisted chain, looking dejected. He's been tied to the tall box by the road, and has removed the back of it, and some side boards. I saw him doing it one day. He was inside the box and trying to get out the back so he could see the Mrs. who was feeding. The box faces the road. I don't know why he didn't just walk around it. He's the picture of misery. July 22, 2008 - I'm hearing a dog in the Yorkie pen - could be spotted pup, but Mrs. keeps laundry on the line at all times so I can't see, and of course, the grass is three feet tall. July 31, 2008 - Yellow dog on road dragging long chain while township guy mowing this morning. Yellow dog and spotted pup in my yard this evening. August 20, 2008 - Black and tan dog in back yard, 11:30 PM. Nobody home. Pandemonium for hours. Dahlia especially agitated. Not sure what's going on over there. Maybe just loose dog. October 7, 2008 - Small white puppy still there. Running loose when I see it. Seems to be a cream color rather than white. There were two last spring, but I haven't seen the other one for months. The rabbit pen is obviously still being used. It's on the far side of the pens, covered with plastic and dog food sacks and boards. Mrs. keeps moving dogs around so that they end up on someone else's poop. Has added fencing at the top of the Yorkie pen, about a foot. Yellow dog was in there for a short time. Last month there was a black and tan in there, that wasn't familiar to me. Now the red dog is in the pen. Chloe is tied to a tree by the road and uses the tall box with no back in it. There is a brown dog with dark gray saddle in one of the pens. He's using Chubby's old box, with the door facing into the wind. Yesterday he was out of it, and later back in. This morning he was out, lying on the ground. Probably out all night. It was 40 degrees. I hear lots of noise over there, usually on weekends when I'm home and they aren't. I can only describe it as, anguished. Disturbing. October 17, 2008 - Black and tan dog (Bubblegum) and small red pup on my compost pile. Unk date - I hear my dogs barking and go out to check. There's a dog by the shed barking at them. It's the cream one, standing on some trash, and, what the heck??? He's wearing a red skirt!!! Yes! There is a piece of cloth fastened around his waist, and hanging down around his hind legs to his feet! Maybe it's not a boy after all! What's that all about??? |
