The 18th century rice mill at Middleton Place on the Ashley River west of Charleston, one of the South Carolina locations where Mel Gibson filmed "The Patriot."  Before the American Revolution rice was the number one export from the plantations along the Atlantic coast of South Carolina.  Middleton and other impressive estates were built along the Ashley River -- one of two rivers making Charleston a peninsula and a strategically important harbor during the American Revolution and the Civil War.  The British occupied Charleston for two years during the American Revolution.  Cornwallis was there before marching his troops to Virginia to be trapped in the siege of Yorktown, last battle of the Revolution.  The Civil War began when Confederate forces fired on Fort Sumter, an island in Charleston's  harbor still flying the Union flag until April 1861.
