The Insider View: At 1 a.m. May 8, 2000, my husband and I thought we had seen as much as we could see. Between takes, we slipped into our building and found other residents in the lobby. Instructions since the beginning of filming of "What Women Want" outside our building on April 27 were to make our entrances and exits quickly and sometimes we had to take the elevator to the basement and go out that way. But now that the scene that Mel Gibson and Marisa Tomei had been doing all night was in the extreme close-up stage, the production people allowed the few residents up that late to remain in the lobby. I shot only a half roll of film inside the lobby of the action in the colonade between the lobby and the sidewalk when a production staffer said my camera clicks were distracting Mel and Marisa. Since I couldn't hear a word of their dialogue through the window -- and had heard most of the dialogue across the street -- I think it occurred to the WWW people that I could be getting pretty good pictures with no flash. (I shot hand held at 1/4 second with manual Nikon/ F4 opening/ 200 ASA film.) "Get them embracing," my fellow residents said. "Show them embracing when the camera isn't rolling." See the next page and forgive me for my hand not being nearly as steady as it was on this page. -- Carolyn Daily O'Connor |
