The Family of Elizabeth YEASLEY
and Christopher BROTEMARKLE

190.1-Elizabeth YEASLEY, b. __?, probably in Berks Co., PA, d/o Michael and Magdalena (___?) YEASLEY, d. prob. in Allegany Co., MD, m. Christopher BOTEMARKLE, b. abt. 1772, d. 1823. According to family tradition Christopher was born in Germany. A son, Henry, states in the 1880 census of Allegany Co., that his father was born in Dunstadt (or Dumstadt). The Allegany family, by the time the history of the county was written, had evidently long forgotten the ancestry of the Elizabeth YEASLEY, wife of  Christopher. Upon arriving in Allegany Co., Christopher bought two large tracts of land from Thomas Beall, lying near Bedford Road, four miles east of Cumberland, paying one hundred and fifty pounds sterling cash for each tract. In 1793, he is listed on the tax list paying taxes on 100 acres of a tract named 'Pine Grove'. On 11 May 194, Christopher is part of a committee to organize the first Lutheran church, on the northeast corner of Centre and Baltimore Streets in Cumberland. In the history of Allegany Co., only four children are listed. To this list the compiler had added Magdalena, based on the circumstancial evidence that as far as can be determined this was the only BROTEMARKLE family in the county, the marriage date is in line with the marriage dates of the other children, and Elizabeth YEASLEY had a sister Magdalena, for whom this child may have been named.  (LE65, MDAL10, MDALB3, 4 p1413, MDB6 No.3, WVJEB5) Children not necessarily in order:

Henry was a large landowner and farmer on Little Valley Rd., four miles east of Cumberland. He served as a member of the Levy Court and County Commissioner in 1851, and from 1856-1859. Henry is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Cumberland, MD. (LE65, MDAL3, 5, 7-10, 15, MDB4 p1350,p1423MDB6 Vol.2 No4 p186, MDNP3 11 Mar 1889) Children:

In her mother's obituary, it is stated that Amanda m. a CONRAD. However, the marriage licenses and cemetery record indicate that he name of her husband is CONARD, not CONRAD. She is buried in Elm Grove Cemetery, Washington, IA. There was no record of her husband. Amanda and her son are living with her mother in the 1910 census, and her husband is probably dead. (IOWA2,9, MDNP3 10 May 1909) Child:

After graduation from high school in 1870, he worked in OH on a dairy farm for one year, then to Albia, Monroe Co., IA, where he worked with is brother as a clerk in a hat store. He taught school for one term. In 1874, he began as a jeweler under D. Hess. After three years, he bought the business. He was the owner of the 160 acre Cedar Stock farm in  Franklin Twp., where he bread Roadsters, Normans and Clydesdales. NOTE: The biography states that he m. Nora SMOUSE. They moved to Washington Co., IA. In the 1860 and 1870 census, henry SMOUSE is listed as a teamster. This is the only SMOUSE-BROTEMARKLE marriage for the time period, therefore Ann is probably the other daughter of Henry BROTEMARKLE wife of Daniel SMOUSE in Washington Co., IA, which is mentioned in both the obituaries of Henry S. BROTEMARKEL and sister, Elizabeth Brotemarkel SMOUSE. At some point, this family moved to Henry Co., IA, where they established a manufacturing business, manufacturing sorghum. The business was located on E. Pearl Street, with offices at 509 N. Adams Street. The father and the sons apparently were all involved in this business. The compiler cannot find a DAYLONG in any of the census records of  Allegany  Co., MD, from 1820-1880. They probably moved west shortly after their marriage. 190.1e-Magdalena BROTEMARKLE, m. 14 Jul 1819, Allegany Co., MD, John CROSS. The compiler has added this child based on the criteria stated in the bio of Elizabeth and Christopher BROTEMARKLE, #190.1 above. (MDB6 Vol.2 No.4p183, MDAL15)
