172 John George WEIS b. 1721 GER, d. 1 Aug 1804, age 83y, Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD (see WEIS), m. (173) Eva Catharina HEYSER, b. 1731, d. 2 Aug 1804, Hagerstown, d/o Wilhelm and Ann (_____?) HEYSER. After emigrating to America, he migrated to Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD, from PA, where he taught school and operated a potter business in Hagerstown and Shepherdstown, Jefferson Co., VA. The family also operated a brick yard in Hagerstown. He was in Hagerstown as early as 1776/77 when he was private in the militia, 4th class in Capt. Michael Fackler's Company, and on 23 Oct 1776 a private in Capt. William HEISER'S Company in the continental service. Later he was a private in the militia, 8th. class, of Capt. Peter Beall's Company, 1st. Battalion. He was in Shepherdstown as early as 1780/82. In the baptism of their son Jacob Eva Catherine or Eva Christiana is referred to as Catha. On 15 Sep 1784 John George and wife sponsored George s/o Johann Peter and Susannah HERR. On 28 Jan 1789, they sponsored Johannes s/o Henry and Catherina Wingert. In Jul 1797, John George and Eva were member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hagerstown. The Will of Wilhelm HEYSER he left the use of his plantation to John George and Catha WEIS for use in their lifetime. Adam a blacksmith rendered patriotic service by the committee of observation on 14 Jan 1777 and was paid for work done to a carriage of artillery in Col. Stull's Battalion. In 1870 Upton was a hatter in Hagerstown, Washington Co.. He was a member of  St. John's Church, the I.O.O.F., and the 1st. Hose Co., of Hagerstown. In Shepherdstown in 1847 he was paid for work done in 1844/45. Catherine is buried in the Lutheran Cem., East German Street, in Shepherdstown.
