The Family of William Hunter MYERS
and Martha Ellen CRIDER
(4th. Generation)

12 William Hunter MYERS, b. 4 Jan 1839, Berkeley Co., VA, s/o David Hunter and  Elizabeth Ann (LEMASTER) MYERS, d. 7 Nov 1920, Berkeley Co.,  m. 5 Dec 1865, Jefferson Co, WV, (13) Martha Ellen CRIDER, b. 1 Jan 1840, Keedysville, Washington Co., MD, d/o John and Eliza (SEIBERT) CRIDER, d. 7 Nov 1903, Bedington, Berkeley Co., WV. Both are buried in Elmwood Cemetery, in Shepherdstown. W. H. spent most or all of his life in Berkeley County, where he farmed. The home farm was located a few miles south of Bedington, WV, along the Opequon River. All that remained (1970s) was the chimney and rubble from the house. W. H. served in the Civil War in a Confederate Calvary unit, but it is unsure if the unit was from Berkeley or Jefferson Co. From an interview with son, W. Mercer MYERS , his father was at Gettysburg, and he had related to the son that it was the only time he knew for certain that he had killed a Union soldier. He had charged a soldier who was about to shoot him, slashing him with his sword. Prior to that, he had charged into battle, shooting, but never knowing whether or not he had actually wounded or killed anyone. He owned a number of farms, and left one to each of his sons. James stayed on the home farm, and W. Mercer MYERS, had the farm in Swan Pond. Granddaughter, Martha MORROW, remembers her grandfather (she was 4 years old when he died), and especially the pony he delivered to her and her brother when they were small. Martha Ellen CRIDER came from Keedysville in Washington Co., MD. Her father operated a mill at the mouth of  Rocky Marsh Run on the Potomac River, below Scrabble. The remnants of the the old mill is still visible in the 1970s. The home farm on the Opequon was left to son James, was then rented out, and finally acquired by the Bethleham Steel Corporation. The bridge across the Opequon has been declared unsafe, and it now (2003) difficult to get to the farm site. The house, as described in the Architectural History of Berkeley Co., was a Late Victorian Brick House, located on the MYERS property along Opeqon Creek east of Bedington. The farmer, William H.   MYERS bought from his mother and brothers, who sold it to his son, James Crider MYERS, who sold it to Howard, his son. The Bethelem Steel Co., now owns the property. In 1991, the compiler could see only the chimney standing where the house once stood. (O2, PI12, 22, WVBE14, WEVEB19 p211, WVJE1, 3, 13-14, 18, 20, 21) Children: (see picture below):
