and Effie CRAWFORD

302.4 William MCCORMICK b. 1736, VA, d. 1816, m. Effie CRAWFORD, s/o Col. William and Hannah (VANCE) CRAWFORD (Famous Indian Fighter, Rev. War Soldier, and Frontiersman; see more at PAFYB2 p392) William migrated to Southwest PA in 1770, and was the first settler within in the limits of the Borough of Connellsville. He brought with him a number of pack horses and was a professional packer, first trading in pelts with the Indians,  packing Western Whiskey to the east (strapping 2 kegs per horse)., and transporting iron and commodities from Cumberland, Allegany Co., MD, to settlements on the Youghiogheny and Monongahela Rivers. His first home was a log cabin on the banks of the river opposite the home of Col. William CRAWFORD, his future father-in-law. He took up two tracks of land, 'Stafford' and 'Rich Plain'. The packing industry stopped with the coming of good roads. In 1795 he built a saw mill on Mounts Creek. On 7 Dec 1796 he sold 150 1/4 acres of land to John Gibson for 252 pounds. On 18 Mar 1813 he deeded 'Stafford' to son William Jr., which was later contested and then divided between his nine children. the larger part of whom moved to OH. William died in 1816 on a visit to his children, and his burial site is unknown. (PAFYB2 p363, 3 p38, 293) Children:

304.4a Provance MCCORMICK b. 1799, Connellsville, Fayette Co., PA, d. 1887, m. Susan BOWERS, b. c1801, near Connellsville. Provance learned the carpenter trade and was the first to manufacture coke in the area. In 1842 he build a bee hive oven. He was a Justice of the Peace in Fayette Co., and served several terms as an associate judge. Provance, when one of the oldest citizens of Connellsville, gave a description of Connellsville people and buildings. He was appointed postmaster of Connellsville in 1854. In 1850 Province is listed as a carpenter in Connellsville. In the household were Sarah MCCORMICK, 82, a widow, and Emily Kearns. (PAFYB1 p370, 379, 2 p369, PAFY8) Children:

304.4a1 Joseph Trevor MCCORMICK b. 30 Nov 1830, Connellsville, Fayette Co., PA, d. 4 May 1904, m. 27 Oct 1855, Connellsville, Susan NEWMYER, d/o Jonathan and Mary (STRICKLER) NEWMEYER, of Bullskin Twp., Fayette Co. He taught school several years, later established a drub business, and then became a draughtsman in the  Department of Internal Affairs in Harrisburg, PA. In 1866, with James McGrath he established the Connellsville Machine and Car Company, manufacturing machines for mining coke and transporting coal. He was president of the 2nd. National Bank until his death. He was Mason. They lived at 410 North Pittsburgh St., Connellsville. (PAFYB1 p783, 2 p369) Children:

302.4a1b Mary Maud MCORMICK m. John M. SCOTT. John was a minister. In his brother's bio., they were living in Ithaca, NY. (PAFYB2 p369) Children:

302.4a1c Louis Provance MCCORMICK b. 7 Aug 1866, Connellsville, Fayette Co., PA, m. 1 Feb 1906, Katherine FELSINGER b. 8 Aug 1882, Northumberland Co., PA, d/o Jacob and Clara FELSINGER of Philadelphia, PA. He attended Mt. Pleasant Institute in Westmoreland Co., PA, later graduated from Bridgeton Institute in NJ in 1886, then graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He started his practice in Connellsville. when the Spanish-American War broke out he was assistant surgeon of the 10th. Reg. PA National Guard. He served in the Philippines (more of his service record at PAFYB2 p369). He returned to Connellsville, and was on the surgical staff of Cottage State Hospital in Connellsville. He was a member of Connellsville Commandery, Knights, state medical docieties, and a Mason. (PAFYB3 p370) Children:

302.4a3 George B. MCCORMICK, b. c1828, PA, m. Clarissa NEWMYER b. c1830, PA, d/o Jacob and Ann (SHALLENBERGER) NEWMEYER. In 1850 George was a carpenter in Fayette Co., PA. (PAFYB2 p255, 677, PAFY9) Children:

302.4a4 Jane MCCORMICK m. Christian SNYDER b. 1818, Saxony, GER, d. 20 Jan 1904, Connellsville, Fayette Co., PA. Christian was a stone mason. He began working in the railroad in Lancaster Co., PA, following it westward to Greensburg, Westmorland Co., PA in 1850. When he came to Connellsville he contracted to build the Pittsburgh and Connellsville Railroad. He worked for railroads all over the country, constructed coke ovens, and bridges. (PAFYB2 p391) Children:

  • 302.4a4d Henry Provance SNYDER b. 2 Aug 1856, Connellsville, Fayette Co., PA, m. 1st. 24 Aug 1886, Jane ROBERTS, d. 1902, d/o David and Josephine (EMERY) ROBERTS of Connellsville; m. 2nd. 25 Jan 1905, Katherine MCINTYRE, d/o Mrs. Alice (KUHN) MCINTYRE, of McKeesport, PA. He was educated at Mt. Pleasant Academy, graduated from Thomas P Forsythe Commercial School, and was a book keeper for a while for his father. He began studying law with P. S. Newmyer in Connellsville in 1878. In 1879 he and a group of businessmen bought the Connellsville Tribune, renaming it The Courier, and Henry P.  became its editor, then becoming the sole owner in 1891. He was in the lumber business in PA, and the rice business in LA. He was a trustee of the Carnegie Free Library, and Cottage State Hospital, active in newspaper associations and various other business ventures. 302.4h Hannah MCCORMICK m. Peter BUTTERMORE. Peter and his brothers Jacob and George were early settlers in Connellsville, Peter located on Mount's Creek. He was a farmer and teamster, hauling goods between Connellsville and Pittsburgh, PA. In 1823 he appears on the list of taxables in Connellsville. (PAFYB1 p399, 400, 3 p38, 293)
