A Brief History

According to the Architectural and Pictorial History of Berkeley County, Volume I, published by the Berkeley County Historical Society, 1991,  page 38, Capt. James Mason House, is a 3 bay, 2 story stone house built of native limestone, having very low ceilings. It was build c1817 by James Mason, War of 1812 veteran, who purchased a 100 acres tract of land from William Rush. It was on the same tract of land as the Jacob Small House, and was purchased by him in 1830. After his death, the children divided the land, and this house with 69 acres of land was sold to Franklin P. Small in 1876, who sold it to Nathan Vanmeter in 1879, who sold it in 1884 George W. Rush, the house and 92 acres of land. William H. MYERS, bought this property from George W. Rush. The frame part of the house was built c1900. In 1920, William H. MYERS sold it to his son W. Mercer MYERS. In 1951, W. Mercer MYERS sold the property to Bruce and Mary Whittington. The house is listed on the National Register, Swan Pond Historic District.
