had been elusive. She is reported in one document, as being a FITZHUGH. However,
there is no proof, and the daughters of FITZHUGHS of the period have very few
Sarahs that would have been marrying age at the time Lawrence would have been
married. Lawrence BATTAILE was a large property owner evidenced
by the appraisers appointed by the court to appraise his property in Caroline,
Culpepper, Spotslyvania, Essex, and Orange counties in VA. After the death of
Lawrence, Sarah BATTAILE sold to a horse, claimed by Thomas Roote to be
the property of his wife, Sarah, was considered the property of the estate of
Lawrence BATTAILE, not the property of Sarah ROOTE. Lawrence paid
tax, 1782-1787 on 1 pole 43 slaves in Caroline Co., VA, and 1 pole 14 slaves in
Spotslyvania Cop., VA. (VAB2, Vol. 41,
258-259, 11, VACA1, VACA2). According to court records, the children of Lawrence and Sarah
BATTAILE were:
298.2-Lawrence BATTAILE was under the guardianship of Benjamin
Grimes, who filed several court documents against the estate of Lawrence BATTAILE
for care of the orphan Lawrence from 1755 and 1752. Lawrence was ordered in O
t 1782, to settle accounts with Battaile MUSE and the estate of his
late father, Lawrence BATTAILE. Lawrence, appears on the tax records,
owning 870 acres of land in Caroline Co., 1788-191, 1787-1793,
