When I got married several years ago, I told my husband-to-be that I did not want any diamond ring. After some research, we decided to donate the money to a school building program. It was only several thousand dollars. But when combined with the corporate match for the donation, it was enough to renovate two village schools in rural China. Here are some before and after photos of the two schools. I cannot ask for any better engagement gift than this.

With $4,000-$6,500, one can build/renovate a village school and name it as one wishes. Check here for more details.
