Ageing Teeth
A horse's teeth can be used to estimate its age. Under five years, a horse will have some of its milk teeth. From six, the teeth become increasingly angled and the incisors gradually wear down to reveal a changing cross-section of the inner structure, which is a guide up to the age of about eight. At 10, a small notch (Galvayne's groove) appears at the top of the upper corner incisors. It grows, reaching the lower edge by 20. It then starts to disappear from the top.
