The actual powered flight similar to in nature to that of the present day aircraft had to wait till the Wright Brothers came on the scene. On December 14, 1903 Wilbur Wright won the first turn at piloting the Flyer I at Kill Devil Hills, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The Flyer I had a span of 12.29 m, length 6.41 m and weighed 256.3 kg. It was powered by a 12 hp Wright engine and could cruise at 48 km/h. The airplane however stalled and crashed that day. On December 17 repairs were completed and Orville Wright took over the controls. At 10:34 AM the engine was revved up and Flyer I lifted off the rails. It wobbled and a downward motion forced Orville to land after 12 seconds covering 36.6 m. Mans age old dream had become a reality. Seventy-five years later on December 23, 1978 India issued a stamp to commemorate the occasion. |
