All Star Game

Game Notes - by Rick

              
              This game was 
              played by Rick since his team, Lake K, had the best record after 
              the second quarter of the season. He gave us the following 
              highlights from the game and I hope you enjoy reading through 
              them. Thanks Rick for playing our first annual SOMIBA All*Star 
              Game and I'm glad you enjoyed it!!!

              
              Quarter 1:

Payton started the game with a FB dazzler. There were four lead changes and seven ties after that. Kidd got a regular dazzler to tie the game at 6-6. Another Payton FB dazzler tied the game at 12-12. Duncan got a basket and a foul for a 15-12 East lead, then another dazzler from Payton. Shaq got a hoop and some harm (and made the FT) for a 17-15 West lead. Duncan got another hoop and some harm, but missed the FT to tie the game at 17-17. Kidd's FB dazzler put the East ahead 19-17. After the West tied it at 19-19, the East was called for a technical foul (like that would happen in an All Star Game). This sent the West on a 9-2 run for a 26-21 lead, the biggest either team had. Davis drained a three pointer from way downtown to make it 26-24. Each team scored two more points for the first quarter score of 28-26 West.

              The field 
              goal shooting was lower than I expected, 50% to 48% in favor of 
              the West. The East was 1 for 6 
              from 3's while the West was 0 for 4. The East was only 1 for 2 
              from the line while the West was 6 for 6. And the East had a 
              slight 11-10 edge in rebounds.

              
              Quarter 2:

There were 8 more lead changes and two ties in the 2nd. With the West up 30-26, the East scored six of the next seven points for a 32-31 lead. The lead then changed hands numerous times with B. Davis getting a dazzler, Mourning getting a basket and a foul, and D. Davis getting a hoop and some harm of his own. The two ties were at 37-37 and 39-39. Pierce and Barry knocked down 3's during a West 12-1 run that put them up 51-40. Shaq missed a FB shot that could have made it a 13 point game, and instead, Kidd got a FB dazzler the other way to end the run. Two more dazzlers by Kidd right after that first one of this quarter sent the East on an 18-4 run including 10 in a row at one point. Now the East led 58-55. The West answered right back with 6 in a row including a Payton FB dazzler. Kidd ended the half with another dazzler of his own for a 61-60 West lead.

              Now the 
              East has the field goal edge 52% to 45%, but both teams are 
              struggling from three-land with the East 1 for 12 and the West 2 
              for 10. The West 
              as a big edge 
              in FT's 17 of 19 compared to 5 of 7. The East still has the slight 
              edge in rebounds 24 to 21. Duncan is leading the East with 13 
              points, with Kobe and McGrady right behind him with 12 each. Kidd 
              leads everyone with 7 assists (6 of them dazzlers). For the West, 
              Marbury is the leading scorer with 10 points. Shaq, Abdur-Rahim, 
              and Pierce all have 7. Payton leads the West with 6 assists (4 
              dazzlers).

              
              Quarter 3:

              This 
              third quarter was another back-and-forth quarter like a tennis 
              match. The East started with a basket and a foul by Duncan for a 
              62-61 lead. The game was tied at 64, the first of 6 ties in this 
              quarter alone. There were also 6 lead changes. Kidd drained a 
              three to help the East gain their biggest lead of the game at 
              69-64. But a Nowitzki three and a Payton FB dazzler tied the game 
              at 71. Kidd and Marbury traded dazzlers to tie the game at 73. The 
              East scored the next five points to regain their biggest lead of 
              five. But the West came right back with six straight points ending 
              on a Nash FB dazzler. Pierce hit a three and B. Davis got another 
              dazzler as the game was tied at 82 and 84. Abdur-Rahim tied the 
              game at 86 on a hoop and some harm but missed the FT.  But then he 
              knocked down a three pointer for a West 89-86 lead. Nash got 
              another dazzler for a 93-89 West lead, and Marion finished the 
              quarter with a steal to give the West their biggest lead of this 
              half at 95-89 after three quarters.

              The East 
              is still maintaining slight edges in FG shooting (53% to 49%) 
            

              and 
              rebounds (33 to 28). The West still has a big edge at the line 24 
              for 28 compared to 9 for 14. Kobe is leading all scorers with 19 
              points. McGrady has 16 and Duncan, 15, for the East. Rahim is now 
              leading the West with 16 bench points. Nowitzki has 13 to lead 
              West starters. Marbury and Pierce each have 12, and Shaq has 10.

              
              Quarter 4:

              The West 
              continued a 10-0 run from the 3rd into the 4th period to take a 
              101-89 lead with the first six points of the 4th (and the last 
              four of the third). Then Rahim got another hoop and some harm for 
              a 108-94 lead. B. Davis got another dazzler to make it 108-96, but 
              the West got 5 of the next seven points ending with a Payton 
              dazzler and 113-98 lead. Later Shaq got an offensive rebound and 
              stick back for a 119-103 lead. With 3:38 to go, the West had their 
              biggest lead of the game at 123-105. The East scored the next six 
              points to cut the lead to 12, but ended up losing by 15.

              The West 
              came back to win the FG shooting battle 55% to 53%. The East held 
              on to the rebounding edge 40 to 38. The game was won at the FT 
              line with the West making 30 FT's to only 14 for the East. The 
              East only had three players score in double figures: Bryant (23), 
              McGrady (20), and Duncan (19). Francis was next highest with 9 off 
              the bench.  The West, on the other hand, had seven players in 
              double figures led by Abdur-Rahim's game high 26 points off the 
              bench. Nowitzki had 15 and Pierce (also off the bench) had 14. The 
              other four West starters besides Nowitzki each had 12 points. 
              Marion was the only double-double man with 10 points and 10 
              rebounds. Kidd had 11 assists for the East and Payton 9 assists 
              for the West. Mutombo tied Marion with 10 rebounds.

              Player of 
              the game was no doubt Abdur-Rahim with 26 points on 9 for 9 
              shooting from the floor, 1 for 1 three balls, and 7 for 10 FT's, 
              playing in only 20 minutes off the bench. The West's bench played 
              much better than the East's.
