| THE PICKS A contest which shows respect for the true stars of the World Cup, the referees! Just kidding, but if you think about it, refs can have as much influence on the game as do the game's star players. This contest gives you a little something extra to cheer about during the games. Family and friends around you will be impressed with your enthusiasm when you cheer "Yellow card, YES!!!" in the middle of the otherwise meaningless Slovenia/South Africa game. Here is how the contest works. You select a team of 11 referees. Be sure to check the FIFA list of referees. You will receive points for the following: Yellow Card = 1 point Red Card = 4 points Penalty Kick awarded (not including tie breaker shoot outs in elimination rounds) = 4 points You receive points for any ref in the game regardless of whether they are the head ref or an assistant, and regardless of which official made the call. However, you can only get one set of points from any single match. That is to say that if you have more than one ref in the Slovenia/South Africa game, you will only get one point for that thrilling yellow card. You might want to check the ref assignments when they are released (date unknown). In the event of a tie, the tie breakers at the bottom of the entry form will be used. To enter, fill out this form and e-mail it to [email protected]. Put "Golden Whistle" in the message subject. All entries must be received by 1pm Mountain time (that's GMT -7 I think) Thursday May 30th. Mountain time will be our official time because I am lazy. One entry per person. All picks will be posted here on the web site on May 30th after the entry deadline.
