From the text: Maycomb was interested by the news of Tom's death for perhaps two days; two days was enough for the information to spread through the county. "Did you hear about? ... No? Well, they say he was runnin' fit to beat lightin'..." To Maycomb, Tom's death was Typical. Typical of a nigger to cut and run. Typical of a nigger's mentality to have no plan, no thought for the future, just run blind first chance he saw. Funny thing, Atticus Finch might've got him off scot free, but wait--? Hell no.You know how they are. Easy come, easy go. Just shows you, that Robinson boy was legally married, they say he kept himself clean, went to church and all that, but when it comes down to the line the veneer's mighty thin. Nigger always comes out in 'em. |

Our interpretation of this: Here, we can see that the Whites in Maycomb were just interested by the news of Tom's death. They didn't care much what happened to him at all. To the Whites in Maycomb, the black society is just a slave community, which are merely just ants in their eyes, of no status to them. The Whites have this thinking that all blacks are uneducated and that the blacks are most likely to commit crimes in Maycomb. On the other hand, the Whites in general are educated and they shift the blame of any crime to the outsider figures - in this case, a black, Tom Robinson. So to the Whites, it is very common for blacks to be put in jail, to commit crimes, to escape from jail with no plan in their head and to get shot or killed by prison guards. The hearts of the Whites in Maycomb have no place for the blacks. They are unconcerned of their deaths because to them, it happens "everyday". In the passage here, we can see the mentality that the Whites have of the blacks. To them, no matter how good you are, how commited you were to Christ, if you were a black, you will almost turn bad in the end. |
